Knocking when braking or changing down

Hi,
My golf GTI has developed a lovely new noise (great)
When braking anymore than very gently I get a knock noise usually just one sometimes a couple if braking for longer distances
I also get the noise on occasions if I change down gear however the knock is a lot quieter
Any thoughts?

Subframe bolts maybe. Or could be a wishbone bush.

Not every time I brake but on occasions yes

Mine makes a popping/ knocking noise under braking but only once it's warm. Not heard one on a downshift though. Be interested to see if you find out what the issue is

Update on the issue
I have replaced the gearbox mount and fitted the ECS subframe bolt/spaced kit and the noise is still there
I'm really losing my rag with this car now just seems to be one thing after another

I'm also getting the knocking when I pull off unless I pull off really slowly and also sometimes when changing gears

Anyone have any advice?

It sounds like something is might be loose in the engine bay and swinging back and forth.

Have you checked your engine mount bolts? Mine was doing something similar and it was the 2 bolts near the washer bottle loose. A way to test (seriously, but at your own risk) is to sit someone on the front of your car with the bonnet open, handbrake on and put it in first find bite point, then reverse and find bite point to make the engine rock forward/back. you could clearly hear it and actually see the marks on the engine mount where they had been moving for a while.  If nothing else, it's a quick one to rule out if you have a willing volunteer :)

I guess in your braking scenario, you could also try diping the clutch before braking (when it would normally make the sound) so that the engine is disengaged and will not rock on the over-run when you hit the brakes, and see if it still does it.  Seeing as braking and changing down will be causing an engine over-run, it could well be engine mount related (maybe).

I have noticed that whether the engine is engaged or whether I've got clutch down or even in neutral I still get the knocking noise when braking
Really falling out of love with this car now
