Help me choose my next motor!
« on: October 18, 2016, 08:07:25 am »
Hey all,

So I've had the GTi for a couple of years now and as much as I love it, I'm getting the itch for a change. Top of my list is the BMW M240i. Lovely car, but actually worse than what I have for one reason - the kids.

I have three young kids and right now, I can happily take the older two out in my car, but once we want to take the family of five out, this means taking the wife's SMAX. As good a car as this is for her, I hate driving it. As such, I'd like to have a car that I can take the whole family in, but something I can enjoy driving alone. I do some long distances, so enjoyment and comfort are important.

Criteria:-

Fit 3 kids seats across the back
Quick, or at least nippy
Decent auto box
Lots of options required but most cars will have then available
Preferably German
INTERESTING

Looking to get pcp on this one and probably change after a couple of years.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Dave

I didn't think many cars fit 3 car seats in the back? Surprised that an M240i would. Is at least one of those a booster type seat then?

If it's an option, I'd make the case for a RS4 (B8 if you want auto). V8, Quattro, manual box (in the case of the B7), quality interior, and practical - a rare (and dying) breed! Also, the B7 has stopped depreciating.

You can do all of the below...

RS4 is a great option. If the running costs are too high then I'm sure theres an A4 Avant that has a good engine and decent tuning potential. Six cylinder TDI Quattro with a map would be decent if you don't mind diesel, or the same thing but a 2.0 TFSI Quattro. Just look at it as a GTI with more grip, more space, and probably more toys and refinement.

My S4 B8 is running 470hp with more headroom for not a lot of money, get one with a few mods and rear sports diff then it is the ultimate all rounder, in a modern cabin. The supercharger sounds great, doesn't quite compensate for the two missing valves but it helps.
Doesn't cost much more to run than my ED30 did really, but individual bills can be high.

Nowhere near as nimble as a fettled GTI though.

Sorry, should have made clear. The m240i definitely will not. Hence my problem. Not convinced an a/s/rs4 or even 6 will be wide enough. I think it may have to be an SUV. Wondered about a tuareg but they aren't big inside.

Hmm....

How old are your kids? Just using boosters?
I am selling my S4 as I won't be able to get three seats across the back (using ISOFIX at least) and will have two toddlers and a newborn to fit in soon.
Some reckon there are narrow seats that go three across but what a squeeze, and a nightmare to get in and out that must be.

Have you seen the Multimac bench? They make them to fit into any car. They are expensive on the surface but if it stops you selling on a car you know and love,  they will resell for about 50% of purchase cost in a few years, and are insurance approved. I will probably get one for our Tiguan, as it is transferable to other similar cars anyway.

My mate has a Q7, they won't do three across.

They're 9, 5 and 1 and fairly small (except youngest, who's a monster!) So oldest is in booster. Others in more substantial seats. They can squeeze into the golf but not for anything but the shortest of drives!

Damnit @ q7, was literally about to look at them.

Quite grown up then so don't rule out a Q7 in that case, I think Diono make the narrowest seats but resellers are quite sparse. A Q7 is an A6 on steroids really.

I think Volvo have a few options for bigger families too.
