Engine Mount Advice
« on: October 18, 2016, 05:49:12 pm »
Hi All,

Just would like to thank you all for your help so far.

Cars been in for timing belt/ water pump, fan belt and coolant change at Awesome Gti. Also changed the coolant sensor and no longer have the water temp moving around!

Also have now replaced the bottom mount with the VWR mount and installed the Tyrol subframe kit. Car feels much healthier now with a better upshift from the DSG box and less "THUD". Wheel hop has improved esp in the wet but I need new dampers and springs so not yet perfect.

Needed some further advice regarding the top engine mounts. Car is now on 123k and I would like to replace them but don't want super stiff. Was planning to replace with OEM but read these wear out prematurely?

Any recommendations? Iv done 2800 miles in one month so don't something that's going to shake me to bits as I spend a lot of time in the car.

Many Thanks

That's pathetic isn't it. I'd hate to think what mine are like on 79k. I'll be following this thread, I'm looking into uprating mine at some point. I've got a Powerflex insert but I doubt it's really that effective.

Mine are on 98k!  If Porsche treat their cars to active engine mounts, then why can't someone do the same for us as an aftermarket thing?! I wonder what the new RS3 uses as that is packing serious power and torque - enough to mash something like these in a year.

Active roll bars are being used on some Audis now too. Clever stuff, but probably rather expensive as an aftermarket option. I'm sure it's possible, and could probably utilise some of oem parts. But I don't think it'd be anything less than bank-breaking. One for the 'money no object' builds!

Mines definitely not a "money no object" build.

What would we suggest here chaps? VWR mounts to complete the set? What would you go for?

No, you won't like those if you don't like cabin vibration and noise, especially now that winter is approaching (rubber gets stiffer the colder it gets).

Apparently a lot of people like the O34 Motorsport 'street density' mounts, but there are reports of poor quality and not lasting.  Other people fill the voids in the standard engine mounts.  One thing is for sure, changing the OEM ones for aftermarket WILL increase vibration, there's no way round it.  The VWR/Vibratechnics dogbone with standard side mounts is about acceptable for me.  Changing the side ones is where most of the vibration comes from though, especially the gearbox one.

Yeah Ive replaced the dogbone with the VWR mount and I dont want any more vibration than I have now.

Looks like I will have to purchase OEM. But what do you fill them in with?

I think some people have filled the voids with silicone.

I've got vibratechnic mounts and they are great  :happy2: stiffer than Oem but don't shake your fillings loose I'd definitely buy them again when I eventually get another car
