What do you wish you had known before buying your Golf

Hi, I'm new to the forum and considering buying a GTi.
Just wondering what, if anything, do you wish you had known about the car before you bought it (good or bad)? Or some questions you wish you had asked of the seller.

Nothing lol every car has its niggles and problems and overall I'd say I'm very happy with mine as an overall package.

Even if I had known beforehand that the interior of a Ed30/Mk5 rattles like a bag of spanners, there'd still be no question about buying one.

Wish I'd known I'd get the tuning bug and got something awd instead. But apart from the lack of grip until 3rd it's bloody good.

I wish that when I bought one and having done some mods to it (remap etc) I hadn't let the wife have a go...now she's in love with it and I can't get a go!!!

The thing I'd wish I'd known before buying is that an ED30 seems to attract so many chumps. It seems to be a magnet for every prat in a van, Audi, or Corsa in terms of trying to race you or tailgate like a buffoon. I'm just driving to work & back in my pride and joy trying to avoid damage...

Weird that, I sometimes get the odd Corsa boy having a go but generally the majority of other drivers in quick cars seem to drive quite sensibly around me. Had no end of attention in my old mk4 and Audi Coupe, both of which were more than 100bhp down on the GTI. Always had them baiting me. Now they're not arsed!

I get exactly the same on my commute to work with no end of cars trying to race me. Although the funniest was a chap in his cooper S in the lane next to me in traffic and kept revving his engine and shooting forward to try and prove something no doubt but did not have the heart to tell him my Eddy has more power in the door handles than his whole car haha

Cannot really think of anything I wish I had known before as it is a joy to look at and drive everyday

How high maintenance they are with lots of niggley faults and sometimes expensive faults they have. I love my car but it's taken a massive step backwards compared to the bullet proof feeling of the earlier Golfs. That aside when it's running right all is forgotten

I'm possibly being a little harsh - just a few noticeable rattles. With that said, it's testimony to the quality of the Ed30 if that's the worst criticism I can come up with. I've had mine for nine months and it's been an absolutely joy to drive.

Haven't suffered too many prats yet, although I did get smoked on the A3 a few weeks ago by an Audi S3, which really made me think long and hard about getting my Ed30 up to R-Tech. I guess it's only a matter of time.

I wish I knew a) how awesome an R32 with a decent exhaust sounds, and b) that the wife would ditch the mahoossive pram, and go with a much smaller one.

The slightly smaller boot space in an R32 wouldn't have been a concern then, and I think I would've got one instead of the GTi!

Once I get the GTi back from Tuningwerkes in a few days though, should be quite a different car

Good to hear you're enjoying the car! I will say the mk5 build quality is far below the mkiv I had... You're right - it is a fun car to drive. I lasted four years until I had mine remapped. It's just such a different car with the extra power. Can well recommend it!
