What do you wish you had known before buying your Golf

I've had mine since Nov. '06. I put tons into it for mods. Maintenance hasn't been much of an issue outside the service costs for timing belt and DSG intervals. Most everything else is Mod related. I did a tune and Sportlines at 20k miles...already decided on keeping it forever if possible. I did the K04 and all else at 58k miles...at 132k miles now. Still get happy to have somewhere to go knowing I get to drive it again

I wish I knew that joining this forum would cost me loads in doing mods I never knew about! (Jokes aside, I love it really and it has fountains of knowledge and is very useful)

Echoing a couple of points above...

Wish i had learnt more from my own experiences of a new 00 Passat. General durability of VWs does not seem to be what it was....lots of daft niggly faults too.
My 1995 mk3 cabby is definitely better built! Just through another MOT with one advisory, the rear number plate is essentially "worn out" and no longer reflective enough!
That said, many other brands have sufferd similarly, and at least I was smart enough not to pay even more for an A3 that is essentially the same!

Very glad that I held out for an Eddy to re-start my modding! However, also wish that I had realised how soon I would run out of traction - i underestimated just how much power/torque was available, and so easily!

Wish I had researched more concerning rust issues. Wings and tailgate done start of this year,for free I have to add. Now have couple of blisters on rear wing and bit of breakthrough on sill!
Feel like a good friend of the warranty inspector!! Did look at getting rid but what to go for? And the fact I still love it, just a great all round car that produces a smile!

We've had ours a year now, we both love it, but I wish I had noticed the rust cos they won't warrant mine.

Are you struggling? I can get 35-40mpg on a steady run if I'm careful with the throttle. Stage 2 k03.

I'm on stock. My 911 was on 26.5mpg over three yrs. golf so far I can't maintain 26mpg despite driving like there's a fuel crisis. It is slowly creeping up but I can't see me getting claimed 35mpg. If I can get to 30-31 I'll be pleased. Many say economy worse since remap but I am tempted if I can get low down torque and short shift

If anything I can get better mpg now than stock, driven in the same way.

Have you reset the computer? The long button on the underside of the stalk - hold that down for a few seconds. If you've been on the current 'trip' for hundreds of miles averaging mid 20s it'll take an age of high 30s to get the average back up. Maybe impossible.

I don't really take much notice of mpg, I didn't buy it for economy after all, but every now and then when I know I'll be doing a good few miles at 50-70mph I reset the computer. I'll often average 40+ over quite a few miles. If at any point I can't achieve that it might point to something not being right.
