DSG faults
« on: October 24, 2016, 09:23:48 am »
Im looking at buying a car which has the following faults. The car has a bwa engine with a k04 turbo, intake decat exhaust etc. The Console around the DSG has also been replaced, so the shifter does not longer resemble the normal DSG - this could have absolutely nothing to do with it, but might be worth mentioning.

The car has been mapped both engine wise and gearbox. Mapped at a company I've never heard of - could be a terrible map.

The faults -

P2711 - Unexpected / Implausible Mechanical Gear Disengagement: No Signal/Communication
P1850 - Powertrain Data Bus: Missing Message from ECU
p0722 - Transmission output speed sensor (G195)
P1793 - Transmission output speed sensor (G196)

The car could be a bargain if these issues are just down to a remap being needed -  but if more serious and needs a box rebuild then its obviously less attractive. Having spoken to the Bristol gearbox centre (very helpful!) they said that without seeing the box they cant say for sure (to be expected) but that if the box had been tampered with incorrectly then these faults could be attributed to it. Worst case scenario - it would need a whole new gearbox build.

There is also a boosting issue with the car - or something isn't quite right - MAF is only showing 200g/s peak which I don't think is right for a k04/straight through exhaust/air intake conversion.

So it could all just be down to mapping. Just after some advice really, the more opinions the better.

Could possibly check all wiring connections and at worst it could be the mechatronic unit as they would all link to that. Does it drive ok or have any flashing PRND?

Also if possible log into each sensor and check it's readings compared to the others.

Maybe also try a box recalibration. Only takes about 10 mins but you hear some aweful noises which is normal.

Drove OKish on the test drive, no flashing PRND. but the changes seemed a little rough, but no juddering etc. Also, it seemed a little late to catch third on WOT, like there was a pause between catching third, a pause enough to throw you forward a little if that makes sense. I think they could be mechatronic/ecu related. I don't own the car, only thinking about buying it, so cant really do a basic settings on it. I think its going to be hard to fully understand the faults and their cause without owning the car first, which is my predicament.

Best case scenario - Box just needs reset/ standard map.
worst case scenario - full gearbox rebuild for around 1500.

Well if the seller is ok with you doing a box reset or having a look at the modules on vcds then maybe worth a shot.

You can buy complete boxes from eBay with about 60k miles on at another shot. I've seen them for as little as 600 to 1000.

Thanks

Im wondering if what I experienced on the road (slight pause between 2nd and 3rd under heavy acceleration) and also the cause for throwing codes out is to do with the fact that the DSG or clutch packs (?) hasn't been upgraded.

Basically, if you have a k04 turbo on a bwa, with intake, exhaust etc on the stock DSG box (even if it is mapped) and the gearbox couldn't handle the power, would it throw these codes? is it clutch slipping?

Another thing that happened was when I tried to launch control the car. ESP off, foot on brake, sport mode and rev. Normally in my car it revs to 3000 rpm and stops. This just kept revving all the way to 5-6k rpm and the exhaust popped as well as the turbo dumping. all whilst stationary.

Confusing. Its at this point I should just walk away, but I cant help but think there might be a golden opportunity hidden in the depths of the bay, surrounded by bad work and fault codes.

My first move would be to cancel the existing DTCs and do a full scan then take it for a drive -  I've had most of my DSG problems show up when it's been driven after a good run 150 miles ish then in town driving they become very clunky yet when cold-ish drove perfectly with smooth changes.

Hi Doylebros, hope you're well. Ok thanks, worth a shot. However, I think It may be slightly different story to yours - this car hasn't been driven in quite a while. The calipers were stuck when I first went to see it. I will clear the DTCS and go again -  see if the drive improves.

Yeah go for a 'spirited' drive checking all gears through auto and manual. As some codes take a while to appear.

I've been digging and apparently the drive shaft came out whilst driving. The seller insists he had it repaired. Im thinking perhaps the fault codes weren't cleared. With the codes cleared, might it drive better? Only one way to find out I guess. Thanks.

The codes will still stay logged even when the fault has gone and still drive fine. Clear the codes and see if they come back or any weird symptoms. A code won't make a car drive differently, it's just a log.

I thought as much. Perhaps a DSG basic settings would help. I think I'm going to do as above and go from there.

Didn't want to do a DSG reset on the car as I don't know how I would respond being mapped etc.

Cleared the fault codes, they didn't come back. Went for a spirited drive for about 30 mins and they hadn't reappeared. However, the gear changes still felt a little rough under load. I think it needs a filter and oil change, and a basic settings with a standard map flashed back onto it to be honest.

A reset doesn't affect the DSG remap, AFAIK. I've done it to mine and the gear changes got smoother.

Yeah, I wasn't sure, especially as it had a number of unexplained faults combined with an unkown DSG map - didn't want to risk it. Think it was probably the right move, ill be doing a DSG oil and filter change so will do the reset then

As above, I'd get a DSG reset and an oil and filter change.
