which oem headunit
« on: October 28, 2016, 09:06:28 pm »
evening everyone,  looking to purchase a used headunit but don't know which one to go for,  leaning towards a rcd510 but am worried about the battery drain, is it much trouble changing the canbus and will it need programming if I do this or is there a unit that is as good that can be just plugged in,  basically just what the headunit to control an ipod, listen to cd and radio so don't really what to pay out for an rns510 plus also likethe oem look,  any advice

I've also purchased this head unit and will be installing in the next week or so I'll let you know what it's like. However I had a similar one in my old mk5 gti and it was excellent for the price (€280). Sat navigation was good although I always use Google maps on my phone so not worried about sat navigation. The media player was brilliant I brought the USB cable into the glove box. Screen display was good no lag or anything and it looks well in the dash. Only thing I could say wasn't as good as oem was the radio reception but it was still fine just got crackly at times. Could have been down to a poor aerial adapter too.

If your not worried about budget go for an rns510 or rcd510.

Are they quite easy to install, i have looked on u-tube and it doesn't look too bad, but they never do.
I am not too bad at DIY on cars but all those wires makes me nervous.

few screws to undo. thats it.  my tip though when removing the top panel with the vents is to make sure you dont accidently unclip the trim from vents as you pull it in one go otherwise all the flaps come exploding out. i found out hard way

I've got an MFD2 in the for sale section. Has sat nav, radio, cd. Can be plugged into cd changer too if fitted. And its OEM VW

With the RCD510 is it possible to fit a reversing camera and get the climatronic screen?

The European rcd 510 has no USB input so you'll have to go down the route of an mdi interface for the glove box or centre armrest or look on eBay the likes of a connects2 kit is good as wel.

Antennae.
Had an RNS315 from Pashka (he?) Recommended this....

VW Aerial Amplifier Radio FM + DAB - 7N0035552Q + Wirirng Harness - KIT
£55 from Car  Systems Poland.
They were prompt and easy to deal with, goid price too. Came in 3 days or so.
Will try to post linky.

Reasonably easily fitted once hatch trims are off, several guides on here for that.
Pulling cables, head to rear hatch was surprisingly easy with headliner "loosened". Again, easily done thanks to guys on this fantastic forum....
Trickiest job for me was soldering the ant/amp fly lead to the rear screen element, as a mech eng i generally pass that sort of thing to my 'leckies, but i managed ok.
When fitted, nothing is visible at all.

Aerial works well, good reception, even in deepest darkest Cornwall. Will pick up same stations as my house Denon DAB unit ( I live down in a river valley) with surprisingly little drop out when moving.
The few total losses are also places where my 20 yo cabby struggles to get R2! FM!

http://www.carsystems.pl/vw-aerial-amplifier-radio-fm-dab-wiring-harness-kit,id1911.html

Lost the ability to add text for some reason, seems to be back now.

Price E54 about same I paid, so not been brexited yet.......
This unit allows both DAB and FM. No issues so far.

All seem to say to avoid screen mount aerials in my circumstances.
A very goid selection at
Dab on wheels   site, comes highly recommended too, colleagues not Pash.

thought I'd be clever and transferred my music from the ipod to an sd card, put the card in the slot and it says "sd card error"
thought I would try this before buying an mdi loom,  firstly, would it work, do I need the loom fitted for it to work or am I barking up the work tree, thanks again
