Strange things in my water bottle!
« on: October 29, 2016, 03:40:26 pm »
I was just topping up my coolant after having a water pump change (another story) and found these floating in my water bottle. They look genuine but I have no idea what they are. They appear to have some crystals in them so I can only imagine they are some sort of water softener. But that just sounds ridiculous

Any ideas?

They look like Polyphosthate filters to me, used for de ironing water (De_ionized). In turn eliminates lime scale and other contaminants.
My guess anyway, until somebody else agrees or disagrees! :happy2:

Makes sense, keep them in to help keep your jets clear.

So the next question is why 2 and should I buy new ones? Yes paranoia for a 9 year old car

I am thinking its precautionary and that's why you can add straight tap water. I will pop them back in.

They might be pretty shot by now anyway.  Could get more or just use deionised water as dirt cheap.

The VW G13 oem coolant comes in a ready diluted form, so doesn't need mixing. If using another coolant I would recommend using de-ionised water if you are diluting it.
