P0441 fault code
« on: October 31, 2016, 01:43:53 pm »
Hi all,

ive read the other threads about this code but left a message and i think the thread is too old for a reply.

I have a Mk5 GTI and i get this code. The pipework all seems fine, the N80 valve ticks too. There was a loud buzzing which sounded like it was coming from near the carbon canister for the first 30 seconds after the ignition was turned. i have taken the tub of its mount and undone the tube that has a clip on it but i needed to ask some questions about the rest. The other pipe which goes in, the smaller more rigid pipe is attached to a round cap on the top of the bottle, does this round cap untwist and come off? Mine moves and shows a little gap when played with, is it meant to be fixed?

I was able to shake the canister and the light went out on the engine then came back 20 miles later - is it fair to assume the carbon is at capacity in this scenario rather than the N80 valve being faulty?

When purchasing a new canister, does it come loaded with carbon or is it an empty case? I could do with knowing a supplier.

i am interested in taking the canister apart and firing the carbon for re-use, but could you also buy new carbon (from an aquatic store for example) and replace it?!

my main concern is, how to take the round cap looking thing off safely without breaking.

It untwists.  It doesn't feel like it will, but it does.

When I had the evap fault codes, it didn't go away until I replaced:

The N80 valve
The carbon canister
The rigid hose from carbon can to tank vent hard line
Fuel filler cap

thanks for the reply.
I will try all that i can first, the canister and pipe back but the N80 valve is too much for me to try at home id say... the clips alone look like nothing ive seen before and it seems incredibly fiddly!

thank you. did you get  a mechanic to do your work?

Yeah start with the cheapest bits first and go from there!  I seem to remember some folk getting around the fault code by not completely filling the tank.  These evap systems can be very sensitive.

Yeah it's all pretty easy to be honest.  The N80 hose clamps can be removed and new ones (from the dealer) crimped on with side cutters, although a special tool for the latter does exist.  Or replace them with regular hose clamps.

Yep, I always use dealer parts   I think the carbon can was about 40 quid from memory.

Carbon canister is closer to £100... Was £80odd when mine was replaced under warranty 3 years ago.

Absolutely no reason why you can't replace the activated carbon if you have the means to split and reseal the canister. There are super cheap options at £27.28 from the old eBay

cheers guys, ill get in touch with VW about the carbon canister. Im thinking it is that on the basis when i shook the canister it was ok for a bit! Ill start with that anyway and do it bit by bit until its good!

From my understanding, its an environmental thing more so than a performance issue..
