Mk 5 GTTDI -Engine Management/EGR Valve
« on: November 04, 2016, 06:49:43 pm »
Hi All,

I have just joined. I own a 55 plate GTTDI, I have had it 11 years and love it, due to inheriting my Dad's car I now need to sell. I know it's not the petrol engine but I have struggled to find a forum that is up to date online, other that this one.

I have a question about the engine management light, can anybody help? or direct me elsewhere?

Kind Regards
Sarah

Welcome to the forum Sarah, you can buy a egr delete kit or like i did get it remapped out.
Some time  taking the egr of the car and clean the gunk out of it can work

Thank you Andy. The light has been on for a long time and I have taken it a few different places for diagnosis and the response I get is EGR valve and it doesn't need fixing if your emissions are ok, which they have been and MOT fine. Is it a common problem? there is no problem with the running of the car, the drive is great.

I have had my Dad's old car since September so haven't really used the Golf as I would like to sell it. I took it back to my local garage at that time to make sure it was all ok to sell and to see if I could get the light switched off. They cleaned it up and said it doesn't need changing. I advertised it to sell stating the light was on and it has been diagnosed etc, someone looked at it and was worried about the light as his relative had not long purchased a Bora and the turbo went. I was happy for him to get someone look over.
He came back to me and said it has a oil leak and the turbo is 40%?! it should be at least 60%?!

This means absolutely nothing to me and my understanding was if it was the turbo I would know about it from driving it. I called back my local garage and he disagreed, he said the only thing that came up was the manifold and they had cleaned and modified it.

Is the EGR the same as the manifold flap? I found something online that said it was related.

A friend has told me to get the EGR code blocked out, do you know how much this would cost?

Sorry for all the questions...I a typical woman ha ha

The egr stands for exhaust gas recirculation so basically puts a bit of of exhaust gasback into the engine for supposedly cleaner emissions. On my gttdii blanked it of and coded it out when i got a remap.
All depending where you live a good mapping company can do it for you

Thanks again Andy! you have put my mind at rest. I am going to get It checked on the computer again Monday to make sure what I was told last week wasn't correct, then I will look for somewhere to get it remapped.

Does it put people off buying with the EGR problem? from your experience?I might be back again with more questions.

Sarah

I find most members on forums remove it or get it mapped out

I blanked it off and had mapped out too. Blanking plate was under £10 and getting the car remapped was about £200 but remapping companys vary a lot over prices.

In general most people are put off buying a car with any warning lights on, regardless of what the actual problem is.

Chris

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.
