Steering Wheel Controller - Removal - How the F@@@@
« on: January 23, 2010, 01:05:13 pm »
Hi All
How the hell do you get this off?  Found the "secret" hole to release a central clip lock.
Now it seems to be stuck on at the back?
Can't see any clips, so are they "secret" as well?

Any help really welcome.

Are you talking about the one in the steering wheel arm plastic? If so:

- Remove the bit of the steering wheel plastic which connects just underneath the dash instruments. Just pull towards you and it will come off.

- Remove the outer plastic plastic by prizing apart the top from the bottom (there is a split in the middle). Two clips at the front and two hook clips at the back which need to be wiggled about to free.

Pic to help with this. Blue is the first step, red is the plastic that needs removing:

- To get the bottom plastic off out there are two small srews located at the front of it. To get to them you need to turn the steering wheel 90 degrees either way and you will see them. Once you have undone these you have to pull the steering adjustment lever down and I believe there is one screw hidden up the some where. Once you have taken that of the plastic should come off to.

Hope this helps. (if you are talking about a different bit ignore me  )

Thanks for your quick response, but no.

It's the actual control unit that is fixed below the steering column.

Left it for now before I snap something important

to remove the steering wheel control module, there are two plastic clips that youll need a thin screwdriver to get out.

Sorry i cant be more specific, but they are there, you need to bend each tab then you can remove.

It was pretty easy for me to work out, as i had a loose SWCM next to me when doing it

Well bugger if I can see owt...

Worked out how to get the black connector off, pull out red clip to release the catch.

So all done, test drive too.

Thanks a million for the cable, think wifie threw it out with the instructions.  Serves me right for being so untidy.

Thanks again

Well I actually did the code last week in a blind hope that I didn't need the lost wire.

When I connected everything back together this afternoon it worked first time.

Been for a little test run and yes working flawlessly (tempting fate now )

If I ever get a newer GTI deffo an upgrade I would do myself, but on a car that need the wire prob let the stealers do it.  The wiper motor removal and refitting is a real PITA  :booty:

Thanks again, if I can ever repay the favor please ask, in the IT business

Bit late now but if you reach up under the swcm and put a single finger up the middle from the back you simply push the clip forward.
