Can't help with the mdi loom_ no idea...

But have come across the file format problem before.
I had a full-feature Dension ipod interface in my BMW (excellent kit), and a conventional old style single din "stereo" in my other cars (cd players used burnt mp3 discs, usb, sd cards etc...)
Used my pods (was, rather foolishly, and early adopter on these) ok in bm, but came up against this issue in other cars.

I learned to get in the habit of making both mp3 and ipod versions (forgotten format name, WM4?) of my music files/libraries. Still do this now, with change in tec meaning i use mp3 in android phones/tablets etc.
A right pita, but never found conversion software. Gave up years ago...

Hopefully for you, things have moved on? Sure someone here will know better than me?

I think I still have an MDI box, loom and green banded iPhone lead at home somewhere you can try if you want.  I couldn't get it to work.  These RNS510s are pretty crap imho, too complicated, too expensive, need firmware updates to do anything useful etc etc.   The blight of modern cars = electronics.

Anyway, I had the same problem with the SD card.  Firstly, what revision is your RNS510?  Some of them can only read 2GB cards (Max) and it has to be formatted FAT32.  Later units can read 4GB and higher cards.

In iTunes, you need to choose your music, right click and choose "Create MP3 version".  The files are then ready to put onto your SD card.

Hopefully, your iTunes is on a windows machine.  If it's on a Mac, that's yet another problem because Macs can't see windows formatted discs.  I had Windows running in a VMWare fusion session on my Mac, so I could copy files over.

It's a right ball ache.  An aftermarket Apple Car play stereo is probably the best option but they are still in their infancy.  No wifi, no Bluetooth etc.  I'm waiting for the technology to improve before taking the plunge!

Perhaps I should update my itunes software.. :signLOL:
Thanks!

Having been suckered into various dead-end Sony formats over the years (bleeding edge tech, top quality etc...sound familiar? Beta max, mini discs etc...) I should have done the same with all this apple i b0llocks...
At least i resisted macbooks, but ended up buying them for daughter's design work!

Have come across the SD card size limit thing before, but using a 32G "full size" card in my RNS315, aok. That takes most of my ipod contents, and certainly enough music for me!

Apple stuff is cool and works well, providing ALL of your tech and software is Apple!   Apple are notorious for not playing nicely with other computer formats.

iTunes is a pain in the arse and far from intuitive, and they can't leave it alone, and it's buggy as hell.  But once you get used to it, it's the best media management app out there (imo).

I remember mini discs and beta max well    Porn was all on VHS, so that killed off Betamax, and Mini Disc was nice and compact, but had to be recorded in real time, so no real advantage over cassette tape, apart from the sound quality!

Remember "Laser Discs"?

I'll make sure I've still got it all tonight first and come back to you!  I have a feeling I might have chucked it out in a fit of rage after I failed to get it to work

I've had these issues too, but sorted them out easily enough in the end.
Which RCD510 do you have? Is it a Delphi, Bosch or some other brand?
You can see what version you've got by comparing the part number. To show what part number you have, press 'Set up' on the RCD510 then press and hold 'Set up' again and it should display another screen with the part number. It should be something like 5K0 035 190 etc or 3AD 035 190 A etc.

I used to have a Delphi RCD510 and that needed to have the SD card music formatted in a wav. file. I found a site that reformats the music to wav (or whatever else you choose) but it would take about 15 mins a CD worth of music.
I've now got a Bosch RCD510 5K0 035 190 A and it needs to have the card formatted in mp3. I'm using the same actual card that I used to use in the Delphi unit.
Also, I found that to clear all the data from the card, you can't just select reformat from the check list on Windows. This doesn't fully clear it. There is another option below that fully erases the card. It can take up to an hour to fully erase it.

You don't need any MDI kit or special loom to play an SD card in an RCD510. It's all about the formatting.
