GTI suspension and brakes for my 1.9TDI
« on: November 10, 2016, 09:53:30 pm »
I’ve had my 2006 mk5 1.9TDI (my first car) for almost 2 years now and a bit of work has come up on it: the front suspension is misting oil and the brake disk and pads need replacing soon.

I wanted to upgrade to GTI brakes previously when i did a remap, but with some research on the website I found I needed new hubs and suspension due to the tdi 50mm struts. Now that the suspension needs replacing, I’m thinking of getting the whole mk5 GTI suspension and brakes setup front and rear (hopefully I don’t bankrupt myself).

Can i use mk5 GTI springs and dampers on my TDI? are they lower? This is our family car and I don’t want it to be too stiff.. Any recommendations - I have been looking at bilstien B4 if i don’t go for the GTI suspension, although I'm not sure about which springs.

Do the rear gti brakes fit straight on my tdi? Everyone mentions the fronts needing the hub and suspension replacement but nowhere can i find anything about the rears.

Is there any preventative maintenance parts I should look at doing ‘while I’m at it’? (I don’t have much technical experience)

Would welcome any advice and help :)

You can use the GTI springs and dampers as long as you change to 55mm struts. But if you're going to do that you might as well get a better shocks and springs set or just go for coilovers.! Think same goes for the rears..!

Thanks mate, I've been finding a few breakers and managed to source GTI front and rear calipers, carriers, hubs, struts and springs for £300. Then in time I can look to upgrade! I was wondering is it worth doing the rears, is there much of a change to the suspension and brake from my 1.9tdi to the gti set up?

Think it's the fronts that will impact the braking the most..not much difference between the stock and gti rears...£300 seems like a decent deal tbf for the whole set up...you cal always changes the shocks & springs later if it's not low enough..!
