Auto Wipers, can i have them coded/turned off?
« on: November 11, 2016, 12:28:15 am »
Bit of a strange question, but the auto wipers on my Mk5 GTI annoy the hell out of me! I'd rather use the intermittent wiper function with the variable rocker switch but it keeps being overridden by the auto sensor, is there a way to code the auto wipers off?

Cheers,

James

You can also try turning the sensitivity down if you haven't already

Would that need to be done using VCDS also?

You can do it via stalk, kind of looks like a volume setting you can flick the switch from left to right

yeah on auto wipers the toggle switch on top isnt for intermittent wipers its for the wiper sensitivity then the car decides what setting to use

I've tried adjusting the switch on mine and the auto wipers are still absolutely shocking in every single setting.

One minute you're driving in misting rain and they're working ok, then all of a sudden, furious wiping - making you look like an idiot. Then, other times when you're waiting for the wipers to wipe in showering rain they're just stubbornly motionless whilst you can't see, so you have to revert to manual.

As per Facians post, I'd rather have the option to turn off the autowipers completely, and use the toggle on the wiper switch to adjust how often an intermittent wipe clears the screen (like how my mkiv did).

Another plee - anyone know how this can be done?!

That made me laugh! You're not alone with this, they really are comical at times. I'd be interested to know if this can be achieved.

Everything's auto for the sake of being auto these days. Don't get me wrong, a lot of modern tech is very clever and handy. Rear parking sensors for example put me off a bit when I bought the car but they're much more useful than I'd imagined. But auto lights, auto wipers... surely we can be trusted to flick a bloody switch!

I hate them too.  Best set up was with my Mk3.  You could set the interval yourself by turning them on, then off, then wait for however long you want the interval, then turn them on again.

Sounds like a faff, but it really wasn't.

Glad i'm not the only one! Didn't realise that switch was for sensitivity, i thought it was just the same stalk for auto/non-auto and it stopped working if you had auto wipers. Learn something new every day!

So i theory putting it fully over to the left should be the least sensitive? I'll give that a go. Currently i leave them off and manually operate them one wipe at a time in light rain like a crazy person.

If it's the same system as the MK4, then it's all controlled by the wiper relay.  In which case, all you do is replace the relay with one from a non-rain sensing car.  The 'sensitivity' adjustment on the stalk then becomes a normal intermittent delay adjustment.  Job jobbed.

Anyone looked into that for the MK5?  I can't find bugger all on Google about MK5 wiper relays.

Turns out there is no relay for the front wipers on the GTI.  It's all controlled by the J400 controller, which is built into the wiper motor.

Lovely.

So it's VCDS coding or nothing it seems.

I'd also like to know if this works as mine does the same as others here.
