Holiday location for 10th wedding Anniversary
« on: November 12, 2016, 09:43:19 pm »
This year is our 10th Wedding Anniversary so i'm looking to surprise the wife with a special holiday, she knows i'm planning something but doesn't know what.

Each location means something to us so it's going to be difficult to choose!

Perth
I have always wanted to visit Shark Bay plus we haven't been to the west coast of Australia.

Auckland
We have both wanted to visit Auckland, i did when i was 11 but that was 30 years ago and i can't really remember much.

Cairns
We visited Cairns (Trinity Beach) in 2009 and absolutely loved the place.

Tokyo
Because - Japan

Oahu
This is where we had our honeymoon.

Budget is set and all of the above are achievable - just :)

Where would you go?

If you're thinking of going all the way to New Zealand, for the love of god don't spend all your time in Auckland.

My wife and I also had our 10 year wedding anniversary this year, and before we had kids a couple of years ago, we travelled to 4 or 5 countries every year - so must've done about 30 countries.

New Zealand was easily our favourite (South Island). Followed by South Africa. Japan and Canada are still on the list to do.

I'll try to get some pics up, but the scenery in NZ was absolutely breathtaking. Like nowhere else we've seen. We made it into a bit of a road trip, landed in Christchurch (a couple of days after the earthquake) and drove to Akaroa for the first day, then drove across to queenstown with a couple of stops in between.

Highlights were plentiful:

- The drive through the mountains to akaroa at sunset, when it felt like we were driving on mars. In fact every drive was spectacular!
- Akaroa itself was beautiful
- We stopped off a night at lake tekapo - which is powerade blue! And the sky above it is a world heritage sight, so many stars!
- Helicopter trip over a glacier, then landed on a mountain
- Paragliding off a mountain near Queenstown
- Jet-boating in a canyon

If that's the kind of hol you like, I'd highly recommend it, and can recommend hotels too.

If you want a beach hol, Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius are all good - but have a think about Langkawi combined with KL - we really enjoyed that too.

Well this list of your locations is so good I can't choose, but the last poster puts up a plethora convincing reasons as why you should spend your money in New Zealand.  :happy2:

Yes, it has shaken my wife a little. BTW no pun intended!

As it stands it may be Tokyo, however they get more than their fair share of quakes. If i'm honest i don't mind where we go as long as it isn't Mexico!

Or the contrarian way to think about it is that it might just have got a bit cheaper! Also, how likely is another major quake soon after (not counting aftershocks from this one).

As I mentioned, landed days after the Christchurch quake (6.3 but closer to the city) and we saw 0 damage outside the city centre.

Well, I will be biased and say you should go to NZ as it is my home country! Went back in 2000 after finishing Uni and spent 6 weeks travelling the North island. Napier was brilliant, as was Wellington. My Uncle lives in Piha - well worth the drive out of Auckland.

Would love to go back and see the South Island. Looks simply amazing.

Cairns was great - Barrier reef was unbelievable....

NZ is awesome but I went a year after the first big quake. The scenery is stunning.

I worked in Tokyo for a month, that's well worth a visit.

Maldives always seems a bit boring to me...

On balance I'd go to Australia and see if you can squeeze a couple of days in Tokyo.

NZ but sadly the quake damage will need to be gauged. The South Island is beautiful though.
