Bought a bit of a lemon from the auctions, rough idle PCV
« on: November 17, 2016, 05:02:57 pm »
Hi guys,

Long story short, if have gone from a MK7 R ( going back on lease) trying to save a bit of cash and have purchased a golf GTI mk5 2006, its a bit of a lemon at the moment and i'm having regrets.

Body work is great but the engine sounds like a bag of spanners and has a rough idle, I am quite handy and don't mind a bit of fault finding myself and have noticed a split hose that connects the exhaust turbo pipe back into the manifold ( think it's called the rear cam cover breather). This has made the idle much better but it's still not good.

I am now looking at the PCV valve which I'm going to replace, I began to dismantle it and unclipped the two hoses.

One hose to the top is fine but the longer hose seems to have been botched together with a slightly smaller diameter hose I'm not sure if there is supposed to be something else in between as I don't really know the history with it. All I know is that someone connected the two pipes together with electrical tape.

Is there supposed to be something inline of this hose or is it a straight pipe from right hand side of pcv to engine block.

Any help appreciated

Does the pipe coming out of PCV right hand side just connect by a pipe to the inlet in the bottom picture

The pipe connection coming out of the PCV on the right does that just go straight to the pipe connection or is there something else in between.

Yes it does but it's a specific type and design so better off buying one from TPS or the dealer

Split and bodged pipes are easy enough to correct, but the bag of spanners bit..... could be worn chain gear (the chain and tensioner tying the 2 cams together) as it will indeed sound awful when it's worn out.

I don't think it's a Lemon personally.  Just a bit old and in need of TLC.  Thankfully the bodywork is good, which is the main thing.  The oily bits are all easily fixable.

Just bought the replacement part from tms who were very helpful, I will fit this along with a new pcv and I think I will clean out the inlet valves whilst at it, hopefully cure my rough idle.

I'm hoping worst case scenario is a new dual mass flywheel

Couple more questions, what's going on with this rear badge, looks like a fake to me?

My bumper seems to be missing something as you can see engine bay near to the fog lights, which bit am I missing. I know there is no floor pan at the moment but I have sourced one which might let some light in.

Nothing is missing there pal, it's the design Called open fog grill possibly to let more cooler air in. The badge not too sure about But looks like someone has rubbed it down maybe due to ringworm setting in. And the black area looks like a bodge paint job
