I can't remember if I posted this problem here before or not...
Anyway I have a really irritating 'grumbling' noise in my Ed30 - sounds like it's coming from the wheels.
It's pretty constant, sounds the same in any gear, sounds the same with clutch in/out doesn't get worse or change noise when cornering.
I had it at a garage a few months ago - they could see nothing wrong with anything. No play in any of the wheels. They recommended I run it and see if it got worse.
No change in noise but it's still there and it's driving me nuts - was in for a service the last day so asked the garage to have a nose around again - same thing, they couldn't find anything.
I replaced all discs and pads to rule out a warped discs a few month back.
Any ideas or experience would be appreciated!

I just did the bearing on her altea. The noise before was unbearable at 40+

There wasn't any play in the wheel and looked in half decent condition when I took it off.

I only buy a cheap assembly on, which is against my nature but for the cost I can do it 3x over.

The noise didn't change when cornering that I noticed

Anyway, replacing it cured the noise.

Cheers Mike. Funny you say that - 40 mph seems to be when mines noisiest too. You do both at the same time. Think I may do the same - just go ahead and replace the fronts.

Pretty sure I've got the same on my car.
Any idea on how much oem bearings are? I've seen a few on Ebay and the price seems to vary quite a bit.
Is there anyway of telling if you have got 30 or 32mm fitting before taking the old ones off?

Oem around £120. I could've got them for £85

The cheap non gen one I got was £35.  I had the 18mm dealer spline socket and 14mm dealer spline socket to the hub bolt and caliper hanger bolts, already.

As per their ad, try phoning to see what brand the bearings are, and perhaps to try gauge if likely gen european non-oem, or Chinese sh1t...or perhaps worse still Chinese fakes of european non- oem.

At this price, my bet would be Chinese, and so I would never knowingly fit, most  especially to a powerful front wheel drive car...
I'm no OEM only sort of bloke, but as far as I am concerened there's non-oem, and then there's some potentially dangerously nasty Chinese tat...
Pays your money etc...i might, perhaps, fit something like these to my £750 mk3 cabrio...all 70 hp of it!

I just did my near side rear and the noise got loudest at 40mph. Was a grinding noise thought it was my tyres first then found out it was the bearing. Annoying to say the least!

Thing is because none are obviously showing signs of wear/play I don't know where to start.
I'll maybe just change the front two then see how that works out...

My alignment was done probably around 9/10k miles ago (after I fitted the Eibachs) haven't hit any pot holes or changed anything suspension wise since.

My rear bearing hub began making noise...there wasn't any noticeable movement when I checked by rocking the wheel side to side or up and down. I replaced the hubs regardless and they were fixed. I did them myself, but would recommend using a tech for the front hubs if not secure/confident in your mechanical ability.

its usually a rear bearing on the mk5 i have found that needs replacing

Where did you get your bearings from Mike?

If motor factor are these from ECP ok for quality? http://www.eurocarparts.com/wheel-bearing-and-wheel-hub
