xs2man's Tornado ED30
« on: August 09, 2016, 12:44:35 am »
Hi guys,

So, hopefully this week I will pick up the keys to a new (to me) Edition 30.

New to MK5's, but not new to VAG's in general.  Currently have a SEAT Alhambra 2.0 TDI for family duties.  My past VAG cars include mk2 GTI 16v, a few mk4 1.8T's, mk4 V6 4 Motion, Passat 1.9 TDI, A3 2.0 TDI, a couple A4 Avant TDI's (one 143 auto and one 177 Black Edition Quattro), and a A4 S4 (B6).

Had a few other motors too, including a couple Range Rovers (currently have one) and been on a BMW tip most recently with a 335d Touring (LCI e91) followed by my current 530d Touring (LCI F11) (and a 330i in between).

Anyway, car history out the way, and a raft of diesels, it's time for something a little more fun.

Went to see an ED30 last week, put in an offer, was accepted.  Just waiting on the log book coming back, since the motor had a private plate on it.  So hopefully in the next couple days I'll manage to pick it up.

So been looking about the site for inspiration.  Now, usually I'd be all about the power.  And, on top of that, the potential of the ED30 is soooo huge, I'm surprised I don't already have it booked in for a remap, lol.

Anyway, will keep looking around.  Probably sort the handling (ARB's and bushes) and brakes before going for any power.

But gotta get the car first, lol.

Picked her up last night.

Got to wait for the rain to stop, so I can get some of my own pics.  But here is one from the for sale ad anyway...

Lovely...

Yeah, spec wise it is pretty decent...

MFD2 Sat nav head unit
Xenon self levelling headlights
Headlight washers
Auto lights
Auto wipers
Come home lights (Think that's what its called), headlights come on when opened in dark & stay on when locked in dark
ipod dock under centre console
Half leather seats with heated fronts
Cruise control
Folding mirrors with puddle lights
Auto dim rear view mirror
Tyre pressure monitoring system
Rear parking sensors
Parrot hands free phone kit
H&R 30mm lowering springs
APR Carbonio induction kit
Miltek st/st cat back exhaust (Resonated, not loud just a nice note)
Tinted rear windows

Have plans, but will just enjoy it for now as it sits.  Keep looking at decent mods though.

Although I'll have to get rid of some motors first.  That's 4 cars and a caravan sitting in my drive just now.  Too much.

Alhambra:

Range Rover:

BMW 530d:

And I'm sure no-one cares about the caravan, lol.

Been on some other VAG forums.  Moderator on ScottishVAG just now, but also been on R32OC, RS246 and AudiSRS as well as Audi-Sport.  Also, WAAAAYYYYY back when I had my mk4's, I was a frequent visitor to uk-mkivs.  Also hang around in Overclockers motors forum recently too, as it's a nice break from the manufacturer / model specific forums.  SO I guess it could be from any of them, lol.

Yes, it is well specced.  Came with some nice mods I would probably have done anyway, and is in pretty decent nick.  A bit higher miles than I would have ideally liked, but none the less, it's a great example.

Was also a bargain, so I couldn't resist.  I wasn't planning on changing cars until the end of the year (this is replacing the BMW), but it came up at the right price, and wasn't advertised elsewhere.

Mods.

Probably start with replacing all / most of the bushes with poly's.  Then think about looking at the brakes.  I like the cheapness of the S3/R32 set-up, but I also like the look of the Boxster 4 pot set-up too.

After that, I'll aim for around 350 BHP I think.  I would quite like similar power to both my old S4 and 335d, so somewhere around there should be good.

Beyond that, I may upgrade the satnav, depending on how I feel.  But cosmetically it'll probably stay where it is.  Unless I get a good deal on some great wheels.  (I have considered putting the wheels off the Alhambra on here already though).

Pics...

Anyway, had it out today, had the wife and kids with me, so couldn't hoof it anywhere.  But I did manage to get some bird to a dirty big **** all over it.  It was minging.  Anyway, excuse for a clean / pics I guess.  (Couldn't be hooped doing the wheels though, and it was starting to rain).

So.  A couple updates.

First things first.  Brake upgrade.  345mm S3 set-up.  That'll do just now.

Also fitted LED interior lights and stuff.

And bought an S3 intercooler (not yet fitted).

A couple weeks ago I decided to go to a RR day, to see what I'm starting with.

Now, I know there is an element of the RR lottery, but I am pretty happy with that, and at least it is believable.  A nice place to start.

So, with the 18's off the Alhambra (for winter tyres), and my wheel refurbisher having a deal on this month where he will do a full set of wheels for £130 inc VAT.  I thought it would be rude not to take him up on the offer.

Today, I got round to sticking the B8 wheels on the ED30.  Always wondered what they would look like, with the better offset and all that.

I quite like them on there.  Tyres could do with coming back down to 225's instead of 235's.  Don't know if there is any rubbing yet either as aint driven it yet.  But they do seem to sit better.

Colour could be a few shades lighter too.  Ferric Grey would have been nicer in hindsight.  But overall, not too bad.

They will only be on for a week or though though.  I will have the Pescaras done in Ferric Grey, and get them back on the ED30.  And will post pics then.
