I didn't like the Rtech map and went back to Revo (wait for the fan boys to step in) haha, but the Revo map was much better for me. Chasing headline numbers Rtech was better but the car felt faster and was more fun on Revo.

Thats an interesting one. whats the comparison on the two? I was under the impression that Rtech maps are linear but more consistent, where are revo was more low end and faded out top end?

Im just asking as I have only had a Rtech map in the past so i have nothing to compare it to

The Rtech map required more revs to get going, to get the most from it you had to drive it harder, the best of the Rtech map came after 3.5k, at which point it was pulling nearly 2bar of boost. The Revo map only every gave 1.7 max bit lower down. The Rtech map made it feel more like vetch type engine, needed more revs. No doubt it was fast, but it felt fastest when really braking the speed limit. The Revo map felt fast all the time.

People say Rtech maps are 'custom', that's not really true. Rtech tune 3 cars a day, 6 days a week, you aren't getting a custom map in 2.5 hours. You are getting a map tweaked to give max power with the HW you have. You only need to watch the car on the rollers to see just a series of WOT runs where max values are being optimised.  Nothing wrong with that, people like them and they produce the numbers, but there is def some 'silver lining' around people talking about Rtech maps. People go straight to Rtech and don't even explore if that's the best map for them. Rtech maps offer one thing, Revo for example offer another, i def don't see Rtech being better or worse. Each has pros and cons

Thats fair enough, As I said I have nothing to compare to as I've only had a map by Rtech so cant compare for other software. No doubt Rtech isnt the only tuner who can do a decent tune. he even recommends other tunes too which is good. I guess it boils down to what you want as a customer. Most people just pass the keys over and let the tuner map the car how they want without stating how they want to car to performance eg, aggressive, lenear etc.

One thing I do like about Rtech is the switchable maps. not sure of any other tuners who can do this other than using revo SPS switch

Retch don't do switchable maps on stage 2+ k04, I thought they did, but was told. It when I got the map done. The Revo sps works on all their maps. Being able to switch maps was also key for me

Have you spoken to Nik to see if he can tweak your map to feel a bit more Revoish?

I concur with your thoughts.  With KO4 engines at least, Revo feels punchier everywhere, even 'under the curve', better even than the factory map off boost.  As you say, the custom map needs a much harder shove on the gas pedal, and more revs, to get the same effect.   Having said that, my car was a wheel spinning beast at 3000rpm with the Revo tune.  The custom map has moved wheel spin zone to around 3500rpm, but the car has enough momentum by then for it to not be too big a deal, especially in the dry.

As you say, different strokes for different folks     Personally I prefer my power served up Revo style.  I believe they have a file for TT420 conversions, which could be worth a look.

When I got my car mapped at Rtech they made it as Revo'ish as they could, also I don't have the linear throttle on either Revo or Rtech. As you say the Rtech map doesn't wheel spin as much as the torque arrives later. Revo feels like factory but better, Rtech feels like something different. Just looking at the way Rtech generates boost is very different. It holds about 1.5bar to about 3.5k then lobs in 2 bar, so it pulls like a train then, but as I said too have to work it more, which I don't like. With Rtech it felt the fastest on a slip road when you can get to 4K in 3rd, then it flew (until you got towards licence loosing speeds) same can be said of 6th gear on the motorway, Rtech didn't give the hard pull in 6th until about 80mph, whereas Revo pulled harder earlier. Same story really, more Revo more of the time. Rtech made more power but only felt it when you were really pushing on, which 90% of the time you can't do.

Sounds like defecting back to Revo might be the answer then     It's just a pain getting to a dealer as they're no where near me.  I wish you could do it online like Unitronic.

I have seen 2 bar on the logs (peak), also ran some logs on the amount of timing pull..... hmmmmmm, let's just say I would have been wondering how much would have been pulled on a hot summers day.....

Over what rpm / time frame did you see 2 bar?  Probably just a spike.  What does it normally level off to?

I wish there was a cost effective standalone that support direct injection and mechanical fuel pump control otherwise I would fit one and map it myself 

It's annoying you can't go back to a previous vendor's map too, so you have to shell out again if you want to go back to Revo.  Or will they do you a returning customer deal?

I went back to Revo for just the labor costs of them flashing back, didn't have to buy the map again. It would have been nice to have someway of reading the ecu and storing the image (like bluefin but for any map). I think you can buy the module which shark performance use (as it's not theirs) and store maps on it, but I didn't really look into it, and no doubt it won't be cheap.

Here is a previous project where I was told a 2.5" exhaust and factory airbox would be a really bad idea, but was actually a very epic machine indeed!  Really miss it actually, it was bonkers fast     Younger viewers may not recognise the car, but it's a Corrado VR6, and the turbo is a GT35R, which is a superb turbo for reliability, spool and sheer grunt.

My dream is to end up TTE420 on my current MK5. Probably take me a couple of years to get there. At which point I'll hopefully be able to afford a 5 year old MK7 R to which I will immediately fit a TTE580

Haha I'm old too! It must be getting on for 10 years ago now that I started project VR6 Turbo...... jeez, where does the time go?!    These were the days before high output TFSI, so proper old school engineering 

Yeah lots of money, blood, sweat and tears went into that bad boy.   Forged pistons, big valve head (Inconel exhaust valves), DTA S80 standalone ECU, Mazda RX8 injectors, and loads of other stuff.  Most of the stuff was sourced from America and Stealth 'VR6 experts' Racing built the block 

It didn't start out with the factory airbox etc, I later evolved it to that because I'm not a fan of induction roar or droney exhausts.   It was a proper stealth wagon and surprised a LOT of people, especially as it had a weedy 2.5" single tailpipe and no stickers or badges 

I miss how it drove and it's power delivery.  I guess I'm trying to recreate that sensation in my Ed30 with the TTE420.

Shame you bent yours!  The Corrado is the only VW I've ever properly fallen for    Just something about them!

A TTE580 MK7 will be fun     I think by the time I get there, electric cars will have taken over and petrol banned

You need more than double that boost pressure to make the same on the ED30 with a TTE420    

The turbo and engine were capable of 600hp but I limited it to 400hp/350lbft because with the O2A Corrado gearbox, any more and it will grenade itself.

I'm glad the MK5 has ESP and TC because you need it with that kind of grunt.   The Corrado only had a Quaife diff in it but does nothing with that kind of power

When you planning to get the TTE fitted?

I want to fit it myself to learn more about the engine, and then drive it up for mapping, so I will need to wait for the weather to warm up a bit!
