You did well for sticking it out, it can be frustrating. I always found a CD better for firmware.

So are you at 2760 or 3800 now?

Sorry to say you are about to hit another issue with reloading of the maps. The A unit has a smaller hard drive so you need to reload a modified firmware from the rnsfirmware site - look for 3800-4020 versions with a 60/35/5% split (the newer maps won't load due to insufficient space on a non storage-modded firmware).
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Looks like 5238 is the best firmware

I'm done with it. I've got it working on 3810. No maps now installed and still the buttons don't light up. Can anyone recommend a decent repair house?

You'll not be able to go higher than 4020 on a B unit and you'll need the 70/25/5% firmware to fit the newer maps on due to the small hard drive capacity.

I don't know anyone who repairs the guts of them

I had a version A RNS-510 fitted from factory on my Ed. 30. I was able to upgrade the firmware to the modified version 4120 with 60/35/5 and V12 maps. Then I successfully upgraded to modified version 5238. It worked really good with that firmware as Josi and others advise. I then sold it because the CD lenses was much more sensible than newer radios.

So, for me, most of the times, the trouble with upgrading the firmware and maps is due to the dirt in the CD lenses. Cleaning it with a cleaning CD or opening the radio and directly cleaning the lenses can solve the issues with upgrading.

I did a lot of updates on my A when I had it, but couldn't get it to take 4120, highest was 4020.

Just noticed I wrote 70/25/5 on the last message, that was meant to read 60/35/5.

Personally I think you are better off buying a much newer version (with the star button top right) for £300-400 and selling yours on, even with your light issue you would get decent money. You can get maps from various sources to get yours back to normal, as such.

But that's just me.
