Short shifters
« on: December 04, 2016, 10:57:33 pm »
Looking at getting a short shifter, is it worth getting both or just the throw one and leave the side to side one?
Going to change the bushes and bracket too, want a nice slick change, never been keen on vags shifter feel.

I believe the S3 shifter is shorter than the Golf's and bolts right on  :happy2:

It has a 20% shorter throw. Not a lot but noticeable and nice.

It's for my mk6 r, so maybes it already has the s3 shifter? I'm not sure. Was looking to see what people made of the side to side shifter really

Even the standard MK5 shifter is fine for me.  I don't understand what the fuss is about with short shifters tbh.  Most of them just make the standard shift notchier and therefore more cumbersome than standard!   And that aside, the manual box is so clunky and agricultural anyway, and hates being rushed at the best of times.

DSG is there for fast shifts

DSG is as dull as dishwater tho  it's more for the feel really, I seem to quiet like some of the ford gearboxes I've driven nice slick direct shifts. Might just try the solid bushes first and go from there

I quite like the GTI box. The ratios are nice. The shift feels positive and I can't say I've ever found myself wishing it was shorter. I did come from a rather high mile Audi 80 Coupe though... the GTI is relatively brilliant in every way!

Haha, yeah compared to VAGs of that era, the MK5's shift is like a Honda S2000's......well, it isn't really, nothing is that good, but you know what I mean

I think my hatred of VW manuals is compounded by the stupid Helix clutch needing the pedal to be right down otherwise the gears baulk.  I need to look into that as it's getting annoying.  There's a lot of conflicting info about it.

Anyway, if your shift is decent, I would try the S3 one with some bushes first!

Helix Organic with oem dmf?

Mine's fine mate. Doesn't behave like you describe. I'd get that looked into!
