Gearbox Oil Leak + Service Help
« on: November 15, 2016, 03:34:12 pm »
Got a small leak of gearbox oil. As you can see oil is dripping down and pooling around the plug however its source is actually from the side of the gearbox as you can see in the second picture. Can anyone shed any light on this for me? Why would it be leaking from here/what can i do about it? Should i be topping up the gearbox oil / is it dangerous for me to drive in the mean time.

The source:

I also will be servicing my car fully very shortly so just ordering the gear.

Is this fuel filter the right one? / Can someone give me the correct part number?

Does anyone know of any good guides on how to change as i cant find one?

Thanks a lot in advance, Sam

Fuel filter change is in the 'how to' stickies at the top of page http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,95125.0.html

http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Volkswagen_Golf_GTI_Mk_V/132-FUEL-Replacing_Your_Fuel_Filter/132-FUEL-Replacing_Your_Fuel_Filter.htm

A mate fitted mine which I bought from TPS, can't remember how much it was but I'd get a VW one as it doesn't get changed hardly at all.

You'll need a new bearing cover to stop that leak.  Pretty cheap from VW.  There are youtube videos on checking and shimming the gearshaft end float, which also covers removal and refitting of that round cover.

They don't normally leak, so maybe a previous owner has been in there before, possibly to check the shaft end float.

Any chance you could point me in the right direction if it's no trouble ? Can't seem to find what I'm looking for, thanks, Sam
