Complete engine failure

I'm struggling to find an engine at the moment with decent miles sub 80k.
What are people's thoughts on having the engine reconditioned ata specialist place, had a quote of £1800 from a place called Eurojap in stretford manchester only about 5 miles from where I live.

for that price I would want new valves, seats and guides aswell. shop around you will get a much better price imo.

I don't know, the ad doesn't read the best to be honest. Loads of errors in it. Errors and engine builders don't go well together. I know it's only an ad but I'd probably talk to an Indy VW specialist if I was going down the rebuild route. You want someone who knows these engines back to front if you're rebuilding.

Be careful as loads of "professional" places that do engine rebuilds still manage to stuff things up.

My mate had his 1.8T rebuilt with race cams and new pistons and found out a week later the cam was out a few degrees, was seeping oil and no gasket was put back on.

This was from a place that does this thing day in day out so shocking really.

I think I want to get an engine that's done less that 100k or I could be in the same predicament in 12 months.

Can anyone give a difinitive answer as to what engine codes would be a straight swap.

BWA seem to be a straight swap

Seen a CCZ from a mk6 GTI for £1300 with only 25000 miles but unsure of fitting.
Are all TFSI engines the same.

VW are a nightmare for making subtle changes to the engine management across the different engines, so I would personally put back in exactly what came out for a simple life.

Or if you have no other choice, make sure you get the ECU and harnesses from the donor car as well as the engine, just in case!

Don't laugh, but have you checked for a price from VW for a long block?  I know that sounds like a bonkers idea, but in the past I've been surprised at their engine prices because occasionally they try and shift old stock at good prices.  Some ebay traders also hoover them up and sell them as "new old stock", so it's worth a little bit of fishing.

I don't like rebuilt engines.   The honing is never done to factory standards and no one ever cleans all the oil galleries out properly either.  Don't overlook options from Seat / Audi / Skoda as they all shared the same engine at some point.

Think the garage are putting me off a rebuilt engine also.

At the moment it has a BWA engine in it, I have seen another BWA engine. It it's from a TT
As long as I get the same engine code will the engine be the same or are there different BWA engines for the different marques.

BWA is BWA so will fit.

TFSI is general. AXX, BWA, CDL etc is what defines the TFSI engine to the different cars, ages, mark of model etc.

Oh good, I can see this one still has the turbo which I am worried that will have failed also and if it has done the miles suggested then should hopefully be ok.

That looks promising! Clutch (albeit a bit rusty looking ) and coils etc still there. Looks like the seller has good feedback. They might offer a warranty for 3 months or something?

Garage are going to do the cam belt kit with it and said about changing the pile pump which was the reason my last one failed.

Spoke to Tps and you can only buy the pump with the full housing for over £1000 is anyone aware if you can get the pump separately?? Garage seem to think so.

Looks like a decent outfit.  No mention of mileage though?

Oil pump is part of the balancer assembly and not available separately.  That is partly why some people bin off the balancer unit and convert to the older 1.8T pump.  How did the old one fail? Snapped chain?

Might be worth pulling the intake manifold off and decarboning the valves before it goes in as well.

You can either have a modified 1.8T oil pump fitted, or you can get the current oil pump modified to do away with the balance shaft setup. JNL Racing offer both from memory

When you ring tps tell them you're trade or a taxi, you should get a discount on a lot of stuff, i used to get 30% everything when my mate worked there, but now i only get around 10%, also use a site called partsgateway, it will source everything you need

Engines done 89000, there were ones on eBay with less but you just have to trust the person who's selling it.

What parts are worth harvesting off the old engine for resale to try and recoup some of my money back?
