Hi all, I bought my Mk5 GTI a few months ago and it came with 2 new tyres on the front and slightly worn on the back, unfortunately they are all miss-matched. In the last few weeks of wet and cold weather I have noticed a severe lack of grip so want to get this sorted soon, especially with planned map in the new year.
I have heard some good things about Goodyear efficientgrip performance and they are a  good price in Costco, anyone got them and can comment? or can anyone recommend a tyre that has good all-weather performance? around the £80 mark?

I'd look at uni royal or Vredestein with that price range.

I go for Uniroyal Rainsports for the wet weather ability and it's decently priced as a mid-ranger.

with a name like that i would hope they are good in the rain! Are they equally as good in the dry?

Continental Contact 5 can be picked up for under £80.

Im running them all round at the moment and cant complain about them at all. Good in dry and wet, no noticable road noise and was even impressed when I did a track day on them earlier in the year

I run on Continental Contact 5s too  and my MK5 GTI (although I have just has winter tyres put on). 

My regular drive includes: narrow country lanes, with lots of twisty bits (challanging but hugh fun); main country A roads, again with lots of twisty bits (hugh fun too); motorway (not so much fun, especially with roadworks and speed restrictions) and small amount of urban driving (necesarry, but no fun at all).  I find the Contis grip superb  for all these different roads and highly recomend.

Are certain manufactures better for certain sized tyres? I have just bought some 19" alloys and am wondering what would be good all year round tyres for them?

Not really.  Too soft and squidgy in the summer months if you're a spirited driver. And to be honest, good summer tyres like Pilot Sport 4, ContiSport 6, Eagle F1 Assy 3 are just as good, if not better, than Rainsports in the wet. 

My PilotSport 4s were working well in 4 degrees C before I switched to winter tyres.

If £80 is your max budget, I would go with the ContiSport 5 option personally.

+1 for Conti sport contact 5's. Have had a full set of these for the last 1500 miles and am perfectly happy with them.

My vote for Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 2... cant fault them. Good in both dry and wet :-)

Spend a bit more and get a set of PS4. They're excellent on cold greasy roads, and by all accounts one of the best summer tyres in this price range. I'm very happy with mine, and that's coming from Super Sports.
