Newbie GTI Buyer Seeking Help

Hi Guys,

I've got a budget of about £8k and looking to get myself a Gti.

I'm in 2 minds on spending the money on getting an ED30 or getting a lower mileage standard Gti?

I know the differences are not huge but wondering if the ED30 is worth the extra cash?

Any advice would be appreciated - thanks :)

If you can afford to stretch to the ed30 I think it's worth it because you get more bhp and a better looking car as standard which us with "Normal" gti's try to copy, you should get a decent one for £8k

Get the Eddy and yes the differences are many and worth the extra money.

Yeah defo go for the eddy. And maybe put another 1k on finance to get you a slightly nicer one.

Better engine out of the box and as said, looks so much nicer.

When I bought my GTI the going rate for an ed30 worth having was 10k, and out of my budget. Prices have dropped a bit since then; if I was buying now I could get an ed30 with the same budget.

Technical differences aside, the ed30 (being a special edition) should depreciate much less than a GTI. So when you get round to selling you'll be in a stronger position.

They're a great base for tuning. Easy 350bhp with a few bolt-ons and map. I'm having to spend considerably more getting my GTI to that level than you would with an ed30!

Ed30 without hesitation. Put it this way: if I was sitting at a set of traffic lights in a low mileage GTI and a med-high mileage Ed30 pulled up next to me, I'd look at the owner of the Ed30 with huge car envy.

IMO it's a special, refined and understated car with one hell of an engine. I've had mine for a year, and (excuse the cliché) it puts a big grin on my face every time I drive it.

Take your time and shop around; try and get a well looked after example from an enthusiast; and don't be put off by high mileage examples, particularly if they've been cared for. Good luck.

Agreed here, I have a normal GTI but the tuning potential of the ED30 is so much better. Not too mention the minor details such as the colour coded bumpers, unique front lip, seats, alloys etc. Also to make a normal GTI "look" like ED30 alone will cost loads to make it worthwhile anyway, if you have the budget for a ED30 then definitely go for it.

Thanks for the replies chaps, has certainly helped sway me back to favour the ED.

Any tips on buying a modded ED?  Pretty much all of the ones for sale have been remapped.

Makes me a little paranoid
