Need help making a choice on exhaust - have searched.

Hi Guys,

I'm looking at purchasing a Cobra Sport 3" Turbo Back Exhaust System With Sports Cat (don't wan't de-cat as don't want to change it twice every year).

I really can't find much info about these exhausts.   I know for a Milltek that the resonated version is really very quiet, however I'm not sure how loud the Cobra's are.

Anyone have one?  They seem well made and good value for money.

I like a sporty sound but it don't want anything that drones on the motorway.  Not sue to get res or non-res.

Any advice?  Ready to buy.

Hold off on the purchase for a second. Search the forum for 'Powervalve' or 'BCS'. (Same brand).

The consensus is that they're one of the best, if not the best exhaust for the GTI. I've got one. And it is that good.

The one I have is the valved version, with sport cat. Nice and subtle off boost, no drone. Then an incredible noise on boost as the valve opens/closes.

Whatever you do, don't do a middle box delete. I did it and it Droned like mad on motorways. Milltek catback non resonated is supposed to be good just slightly louder than stock.

The wife would kill me if I got a CC.

I looked at the Milltek but it's another £300 and I can't see why.  If the non-res Cobra is the same as the Miltek I'd rather go for that.

Why not save up until you can afford to buy an exhaust outright.

Funnily enough I was thinking that too but wanted to take advantage of the current 20% discount that expires and who doesn't like 0% finance.  Be another year until I could save enough to get a BCS I reckon.

I just don't really like my current setup.  3" unbranded sports cat into standard system.

Sounds rubbish till it warms up.

As AJP says, I would strongly recommend waiting for something top quality.  That old 'buy cheap, buy twice' saying is true for a reason 

You could always get a cheap factory downpipe off ebay to tide you over if the current setup is pants?

@Matt81 I have a Turboback Cobra exhaust. Its 3 inch all the way. im probably on of the only people running this as everyone else seems to run Miltek or BCS powervalve.

Its non resonated so quite loud but will quieten down. it sounds sporty and im happy with it. If its too loud for you then you can get a resonator box welded in. I say do it

I'm sure it was heading towards a grand for the full bells and whistles package with sports cat and resonator.  If you hate drone, a resonator is probably a good idea.  You can always sell it on afterwards if you find it's too quiet.

I'm not shy of being a bit spendy with my car, but I agree, £1500 is a bit OTT for an exhaust, imo.

Please do not buy a Cobra Exhaust, Absolutely shocking systems. Very average build quality, Poor welding, Poor quality Silencers.

I was unlucky enough to buy a car with a full Cobra System fitted on a previous car back in 2011, The System was build and fitted on the car in 2009 and had only covered about 10000 Miles when I bought the car when all the innards of the Silencer came out of the tailpipe!

I took it to Exhausts UK/Cobra Dealer in Sheffield who actually fitted/built the System originally along with the invoice but as I was not the original owners and the car had changed hands they would not honour any Warranty so I unfortunately had to purchase and Brand new Rear Silencer from them.

While I was under the car I could see the Pigeon sh*t welding on the flanges and about 3 Months after I sold the car the Downpipe cracked.

If the BCS is out of your budget the you could go for a Milltek, Even lookout for a used system? Plenty come up for sale that have only been fitted for a few Months at a reduced price.
