ED30: OEM rear brakes hot (at 80 000miles)

I noticed that consumption at the speed of 50mph was about 10-20% higher than normally and after the drive (30miles) I could smell both rear brakes.
Left-hand rotor was hot enough to burn my finger tip.

Do you think I have to get new calibers or will it just be "a good cleaning and crease" (install of service kit)?

Rotors looked good and so did the pads.

What about the bearing, will those take that heat easily?

Sounds like the caliper is binding.

Very common for the rear calipers to seize on these cars. Quite a few threads on it. I got new calipers from TRW. A bit dearer than refurbing the existing calipers, but from what I'd read once they start playing up it's tough to really fix them for any decent length of time.

You should plan for new calipers if you want to sort it.

All depends on how hand on you are.

Normally it's the rubber boots on the sliders that fail and the grease dries up causing the slider to stick. Common issue on VW's so you can get a new set of boots and grease for them.

I took a wheel away to see better and I noticed that brake pads, pins and boots didn't move too well, and there were a lots of dirt everywhere (surprise).

Local weather is quite chilly at this time of year, so car is going to repair shop. Good cleaning and install of service kit is the first plan (£100 for both sides).

I still hope that I don't have to get new calibers and carriers (new red TRWs ain't cheap).

Same thing happened to my Edition 30 at 95K miles.  Both rear calipers needed replacing.  They were too far gone to be overhauled.

My last Edition 30 08 Plate which had only covered 43K Miles had a NSR Caliper at 39K Miles due to binding.

I also had to put a pair of Rear Calipers on my Skoda Fabia VRS, 70K Miles and a 55 Plate. Although the Pistons where sticking it had the opposite effect on that car though as the Handbrake was non existent with loads of free play in the lever and a big rusty lip on the Brake Discs.

Both cars have a very similarly designed TRW Caliper, I put new TRW's back on too and they came pre-painted.

Depends what the issue is with your Calipers but if the Pistons wont go back then its replacement time.

What I would advise if the Discs have got too hot and discoloured they could have possibly warped if they have got hot enough due to the binding then I would replace the Calipers, Discs, Pads and also the Brake Fluid.

Same here. My rear left caliper was stuck.

I opted to change both rear calipers at the time rather than service them for fear it would happen again.

If anyone is interested. You can swap out the GTI rear calipers for ones from a Caddy 2K. They have slightly larger pistons so give you a bit more braking force on the rear. (uses the same discs and pads)

I've had to replace both rear calipers on my ED30.  They just fur up and seize the piston. I've been trying more regular brake fluid changes to see if this helps.  So far, so good.

Cheap fix lasted just 2 000miles, as I was told here. Both changed to new at 82 000miles.
