My golf has blown up
« on: January 26, 2010, 07:53:12 pm »
Friday was driving to work doing 60mph on dual carriageway when all of a sudden i heard a loud clunk, looked in the mirror and smoke was bellowing out of the exhaust like nothing ive seen before. The car started to loose power and now wont even start at all. The AA didnt have a clue of the problem yet he didnt really seem interested as it was 6am in the morning and just wanted to get it towed away. I drive an 05 plate golf gt tdi remapped to 180 bhp it had a full service 3 months ago and the mileage is coming upto 50k. Does anyone have any idea wot the problem could of been . Any ideas would be much appreciated steve

In some cases it doesn't mate it just depends, I had this happen three times on my old A3 which had the identical engine! Who remapped it by the way?  :happy2:

Defo sounds like turbo to me. Common as buggery.

I'd say the shaft on the turbo snapped which can result in a non start because if the turbo can't spin it blocks the air going into the engine hence a non start.

What is it that makes the tdi turbos so sh!t? Can't you buy turbo bearing kits? Wouldn't re-newing them once in a while help out a little?

My anni had turbo replaced at 13k just before i got it, along with manifold, and a list of other bits, even then the invoice was for £££'ss as it was just out of warranty. Good luck
