Advise/help needed
« on: February 03, 2017, 11:31:37 am »
Hi guys, the other week I had a few bits done to my mk5 and now getting the EML engine light come up.

Background:
Had cam belt, water pump, belts, cam chain, tensioer etc changed. When done a test drive was performed and on the VDCS some settings were dropping out of range and at the time was felt the n205 was at fault. This was cleaned and car ran fine.

On my way home (under 10 miles) the light came back, so went back and code identified (I will get this, don't have with me at the moment), code cleared, drive home and come back on.

So I purchased a new n205 from TPS. Went back, got fitted. Test drive with live VDCS and all was ok, only slight worry it dropped again once when on the run. Sorry I was driving at the time, is the two readings usually around 28w is that makes sense. On drive home fine, no light. Then next day dropped son of at school all fine (short run) then when on way to work, EML light back on again.

Car shows no signs or rough idling running or anything.

James at VDS has been amazing and trying to resolve.

What could be our next option? Cam shaft adjuster? I know once I have code be helpful.

Many thanks Si

Code is:

Camshaft Positioner (Bank 1 intake) Slow response P00A
Not a plausible signal.

Doing a few oil/filter changes this weekend, then dropping the sump this weekend and replacing the oil pick up pipe.

Will let you know how get on.

Also picked up the three small seals that sit inside the cam chain housing that locate inside the cam adjuster. These are prone to failing, and as that has all been off recently makes sense could be this.

Are those rings now plastic?  I believe they used to be metal and consequently wore deep grooves into the housing, so snapped when pulling the cover off to do a chain job.  Might want to check your housing isn't scored enough to cause a bit of oil pressure creep.

Yes they are the ones. Will check when we take the cover off thanks.

Luckily I had the part number for them as not listed as a repair kit for the mk5s

Good stuff.

Not seen a fault code for slow responding VVT adjuster before, so it'll be interesting to see what the cause was!

Maybe its an age/mileage thing as Niki has one with same issue in at R-Tech this week. The signal drops now and then, once drops throws the light up.

Well I hope you don't need a new adjuster.  Crazy money and repeat labour.

I want to switch the damn thing off really.  It's only for EGR and NOX reduction at part throttle mainly, but does help a little with bottom end torque.

How you getting on with this bud?

Think we have cracked it Jake.

Brother and I did two oil changes
Dropped sump
Replaced oil pick up
Removed cam chain adjuster housing and replaced the three seals. When we took this off one was broken so suggests causing the issue.

Will find out tomorrow if cured

That's great news mate :happy2: (hopefully)
Is that something that should of been replaced when the chain was done or is that not part of the work?

I'd highly recommend anyone getting the cam chain do to get these seals Jake. Are only £30 for the three, and as all off at the time a no brainer.

Will update my thread with pics/part number etc.
