Just did this myself yesterday.

My old one was getting eaten up by rust different places, so decided to buy a brand new one at VW and have e paint. Also purchased new cable sets and the FM filter box since that also was very rusty.

anyway, first things first.. I made every thing ready, pulled wires and such before the swap (mostly cus it's to cold outside to work when I have no garage xD ).
I removed the c pillar trim to pull the wires through and get them connected the right way again when they new tailgate is fitted.

took about 2 hours installing new taillights, the tailgate and to put it all back together except the trim on the tailgate since I ordered a new one :)

Let me know if you get stuck and need some help, I'll try explain the best I can :)

I think I've made a bit of a c#ck up with the mk5 golf gti edition 30 tailgate I've just brought ?The tailgate I have on is the original one with a light tint but the edition 30 one looks like it hasn't got a tint at all or is it my eyes are tired after a long day ?

Hi mate, It's the tailgate window I'm unsure about, At the minute my rear sides & tailgate glass is a sort of mid smoke tint from the factory but the one I've just brought has got like a light green tint ? I suppose I'll have to get the new one tinted at 20 or 35% smoke.

there isn't much room to do the alignment so mine is almost there, will have someone to run through all doors etc when it's going to be painted.

Really isn't the much of a hard job to do.

start undoing the 4 bolts (2 on each side) - Take of the gas struts the tailgate - get someone to hold the tailgate in the opposite than yours and then just undo the bolts and be carefull not to scratch anything when you've got it free and ready to down.

Do all the wire swaps you the boot you need to be doing, take the new one and put a bolt in the 2 outer holes just to make it stay, put on the gas struts to help you hold. put in the 2 inner bolts. don't tighten anything totally yet! - Take the gas struts off again and the tighten all 4 bolts. Put gas struts on and viola... :) ;)

yes they do vary on colour and not many people know this. Mine have a blue tint all round and when I had my front screen fitted twice they tried to fob me off but I persisted and they forgot to charge me and sent me a final invoice of nil to pay  :jumpmove: Autoglass are jokers but got a free wind shield and rubber trims out of it in the end

I just swapped the old rear window to the new tailgate since there wasn't anything wrong with it :)

but yes there's difference in the types of glass.
