Tailgate gap
« on: February 07, 2017, 07:17:11 pm »
Hi guys doesn't anyone else have a gap on 1 side of their tailgate which is larger than the other? The gap between the tailgate and roof is spot on. Also the tailgate glass doesn't seem to line up. The car hasn't been in a crash and the glass is genuine VW. It's just bugging me.

It looks out of alignment with the rear light as well. Try adjusting the rubber bumpstop if that doesn't work then remove the rear panel trim and adjust the striker if doing that brings the other side in too far wind the bumpstop on that side out  :happy2:

Thanks bud I shall give it a go... the rear light is my bad i removed them, and 2 small plastic spacers which were stuck to the light came away. Getting ED30 rear lights at some point.

Yeah mine's like that too.  With the amount of MK5s I've seen with really patchy panel gaps, I can only assume they were shoddily made at the factory in the first place.

Some are spot on. I get some strange looks when I see a mk5 and check out their boot gaps lol

I'm really bad for it.  If I see one that's better put together than mine, I get back into mine and have a little sob

Typically, it's always the basic 1.6 MK5s and diesels which aren't enthusiast cars that have the perfect gaps!

They are easily correctable though.

Just walked past a colleague's brand new MK7 GTI in the work car park, and guess what?  Yup, it has a badly aligned tailgate

That's shocking, I wouldn't even accept it till it was sorted 30k+ for a new GTI.

It is bad indeed.  The nearside rear light (tailgate portion) is a good 5mm higher than the offside one.  Not even my 10 year old jalopy is that far off.

All of the Audis in the carpark not only have much tighter gaps, they're all 100% spot on aligned too.   I guess the people who say Audis are just VWs are completely wrong.  The evidence they are not is clear to see!
