Problem is the cam and pump MAY look fine to an untrained eye.

There may not be any chunks missing out of it, or obvious wear, and the angle you can see the cam doesn't make it easy to spot the obvious rounded shape of the lobes etc.... Forgetting about the rest of the follower which will have made its way around the engine for a minute...

Some people don't realise how little the pump actually moves and how much difference those few mm can make to fuel delivery etc.

Dropped the sump off a friends GTI a few days ago to clean the pick up pipe and found pieces of his cam follower in the corner of the sump. They'd been in there for about 8 months

If the roller follower conversion wasn't so ridiculously over priced, I'd be doing it.   You can change the DLC tappet 18 times for the same price  :stupid:

I'd rather stick to my annual follower change. They come out looking almost new and it's a small price to pay. Don't think I'll be owning the TFSI for another 18 years to get my moneys worth

Downside is its a much heavier setup too, not great for high revving builds... but then again neither is the balance shaft assembly

Two horrible failures mentioned by Dan there which I why I wished I'd never bought the tfsi and stuck to my Audi cars lol

That picture of the Facebook guys follower is definitely a worry but he seems to think all is well but only time will tell or he will anyways  :signLOL:

His new follower will be chewed to pieces if his cam lobe is fooked!

What I can't believe is how often this subject & carboned up valves come up!   I'm sure if we were to look in a dictionary under carbon, it would say "See VW direct injection".

I've been in the same boat when I went to service my car and found my follower in the same state.

and then?

New fuel pump, follower, cam and whilst there got the chain, tensioners, belt and water pump done.
But now have a p0011 code which the garage can't diagnose...I've narrowed it down to the vvt unit

Let's be fair - the follower isn't in any way deemed a servicable item by VW. Which is questionable. Some cars seem to barely score the surface after miles and miles, but others get this mess. Unless you're on a forum like this or you're into your cars you wouldn't think to check/replace it.

These cars are simple A-B jobs for lots of people out there. Plenty on long life intervals too, cheap service parts etc, pretty much getting the bare minimum care. I wonder how many are driving around completely oblivious to impending failure?
