Uh-oh
« on: January 29, 2010, 01:05:42 pm »
In true typical stealth fashion, I've somehow buggered my car. Was fine up unil today and had its second service a few days ago.

Today, trip up to see a friend. at one point about to undertake to enter onto a slip road. Doing 60mph, 6th gear. Somehow hit second instead of fourth. Engine red lines, think there was a momentary loss of power but engine didn't cut out. Car definitely felt funny afterward. First I thought it was the engine but think it may be the clutch.

Car can hit high speeds without problem but doesn't feel as urgent as before. The clutch pedal is very soft (but springs back to the normal position okay). Absolutely no strong biting point but there is a slight one vaguely detectable. Have managed to drive in stop/start traffic and park without problems (including without stalling).

Ideas? Is it the clutch?
How much for OEM replacement?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Just had an oem clutch from 'seremotors' in ireland who are a seat dealer and the lad David there is incredibly helpfull.  My clutch kit including release bearing was £147 + £10 postage and fitting was by local dealer at £175 inc vat.

Phone VW and get a price for your clutch for your chassis number then ask the part numbers of the clutch kit + release bearing.

My clutch kit was 06F141015CX
Release bearing oa5141671

Hope that all helps  :happy2:

60mph shouldnt destroy your clutch though from a low revving 6th to 2nd change should it?

i can comfortably hit 60ish in 2nd, never changed down to a redline though

isn't completely lacking power just lack of oomph. It hits high speeds reasonably well but I don't feel like I'm being pushed into my seat with he acceleration. Will try and test it out on the return journey.

Yeah I noticed that you had posted that the other day Stealth....probably not the greatest of habits to get into.  :scared:

Aside from that, hope your car is ok.

But when I go from 5th to 2nd, I slow down first using the brakes! I don't just slam it into 2nd!!!  Example on a dual carriageway. 60mph. Fifth gear. Roundabout coming up. Brake to slow down and block change to 2nd gear. Done it for the past 20 months in the GTI with no trouble. The car felt completely different when I did this.

it is possible to over rev when down shifting past the rev limiter, so you need to VCDS and find your max revs hit (I seem to remember its stored)
but many say its save to way over the redline as std for v short periods
your clutch may just have given up the ghost before it took your valvetrain into orbit ...

If it really feels different then I would definitely suggest a compression test.

but weve all done it so dont worry yet...most of us get away with it  :happy2:

Okay well the return journey was fine. Clutch no longer felt soft. Strong biting point. Plenty of power.

What's a valvetrain? Why would it go wrong? How much would it cost to have fixed?

I was in 6th at 3-4k revs when I downchanged to 2nd. Immediately got it into 4th when I saw it redline. Doing maybe 50-60mph.

I have VCDS but other changing things like the RNS510 theme or changing the autolocks etc don't know what I would have to do to find out max revs. Any pointers would be grateful.

Cool. I'll run a scsn tonight once I've returned the machine to its lair.
