1 month ownersbip (what to look out for)
« on: February 26, 2017, 01:27:18 pm »
Hi all,

I just completed 1 month of owning a 2005 Tornado Red DSG, 18" wheels with 97k on the clock.

Just after I bought the car I had to call the dealer because the car was not reaching temperature and a EVAP code made the EML show up on the dash. The main thermostat was replaced and now the car reaches temperature and sits at 90 but it takes ages. Reading through this forum I found out that the when people had this problem it was cured changing the two inlines thermostas and I will be doing this at some point. My question is, what should I be changing in order to prevent any of the common problems? PCV, DV valve, cam follower? I have the car booked to replace/change one of the CV joints, something on the suspension (arm bush?) and replacing some other thing that I forgot the name as my mechanic suggested to try to fix a small clicking noise that I hear when I accelerate from a standstill. My mechanic will try to put ecerything through the Customer Protect warranty that came with the car. Any other thoughts about what I should look for and replace in order of "preventing" common problems?

This is my second car after had a 2005 TDI. and I know very little about cars so any input will be appreciated. I am in my mid 30's and only driving for less than 2 years  :driver:

Cheers!!!

The code is P0441. As soon as my friend put the dongle and scanned for codes the light disappeared from the dash even though he didn't clear the codes and it's still able to trace the code that is stored on the ECU.

i get an EVAP code which i think is the same as the one you mention, but i only get the EML light come on and the code when i brim the fuel tank. something to do with the charcoal filter or N80 valve....

Not 100% sure, there's quite a bit of info on it online. i've just stopped filling the tank right up and it doesn't come on anymore!

Don't worry about P0441, not an issue worth considering. It's due to the PAC canister. Delete the code and move on.

Replace your PCV if you have no evidence of it being done.

Replace your DV if you have no evidence of it being done. Chances are, it has ripped.

Replace your cam follower immediately if you have no record of it being done.

Replace your inline (1 for manual, 2 for dsg) thermostats and your car will reach temperature in minutes.

I would be very surprised if any of the above were covered under warranty as they're wear and tear items.

Awesome!!! The car is booked for the 11/03 but I will speak to my mechanic to sort out these parts too. I am not worried about the final bill. Better to prevent than paying much more later on.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

look into the DV+ for the DV replacement too - it's fit and forget as opposed to a servicable part.

All of what Luke has said are the first things to do when buying a used GTI in my opinion, and you're right, better to pay £x now than £x times 10 when one blows up  :signLOL:

I will buy the DV rev. G and the cam follower this week from Awesome GTI. I would like to buy the DV+ and forget about it but I am affraid I won't be able to do this time.

With regards the PCV, I was reading from some other posts that there are different types of PCV depending on what is currently on the car. PCV with a breather, without a breather, etc. So I will rather ask the mechanic to check that first then I can buy the correct part and replace it later.

Will deffinitely get the inlines done as well so hopefully the car won't take 30min to reach temperature anymore.

Cambelt and water pump were replaced around 70k/80k miles (can't remember now). The car is currently at 98k miles so I think I am ok for now.

Guys, I really appreciated everyone's input. I am very happy to have joined this forum as it seems that everyone help each other. It's really nice when you don't have a clue about cars (like myself) and rely in this forum to check previous threads for information and also get advice from other owners, enthusiasts, etc.

Thank you very much guys. Much appreaciated.

So, I had the cam follower, dv (rev. G), thermostast inlines and PCV replaced. The cam follower was better than I expected and the dv that was in thw car was the revision B (didn't see any split).

The car now reaches temperature in about 5 minutes :) The acceleration from standstill is smother and the car does't seems to be jerky as before or at least it feels better. My concern is that the car feels slower. I am coming from a 2005 DSG 1.9 TDI and when I bought the GTI I was like "wow", I can kill my self in this car. After getting the car from the mechanic it feels that the car takes a bit longer to reach 60 mph if I put my foot down. It might be the case that I got used to the power or the new parts need time to bed in?

Anyone had a similar experience after changing cam follower, DV or PCV?

Cam follower shouldn't be the cause as it's pretty basic.

I wonder if the DV isn't installed correctly (as in not sitting flat to the turbo or is loose?).

Not sure how the PCV would cause performance degradation but happy to

I have to say that today the car was much better and smoother. I guess everything is fine by now.

Thank you very much for everyone's input.

Cheers!!!
