Brake discs and pads, ED30 standard calipers

Hi all,

Had the car serviced and MOT'd at the end of last year and was told my front discs and pads are becoming very worn, did the usual and forgot about it as the Mrs uses the car as her daily.
Now the pads seem to be none existent and squeal like mad

Would these be ok to fit to the bog standard calipers as a cheap replacement?

I tend to stick to OEM if the car isn't beaten on regularly.  Not sure how much pads and discs from VW are though!

That kit does seem good value though.  Will have to declare it on the insurance, mind, as the discs are grooved.

Didn't you have some dodgy Brembo pads a while ago Rich? I distinctly remember a photo of them crumbling to bits!

That kit does seem good value though.  Will have to declare it on the insurance, mind, as the discs are grooved.

It's an arse covering thing.  If you crash the car and the insurance assessor looks through the wheel and sees grooved discs instead of OEM plain ones, they might use it as a non-declaration get out clause.  Never underestimate the underhand slyness of insurance companies, and the lengths they will go to to avoid paying out!   Insurance companies are funny with brakes.  Instead of viewing more powerful brakes as an improved safety thing, they take the view you'll drive faster and brake later.

I rang mine the other Week, Told them everything. Even down to the GFB-DV+!

Its all fine and dandy not declaring something because you don't feel it is an upgrade and then you are involved in a non fault collision but don't get paid out because you have voided your Insurance!

Indeed.  A more expensive policy is cheaper than forking out for a new car, and on top of that, they can also refuse to cover a third party claim against you.....which if you end up seriously injuring someone (or worse), then you really are up a creek without a paddle!

You could play the ignorance card - "It was like that when I bought the car and didn't know any different, I don't know Golfs" - but even then there's still no guarantees.

Declare EVERYTHING, even LED bulbs, changes of switches and AC panels....EVERYTHING!

Did you go for the EBAY set of Brembo discs and pads ?  I'm in pretty much the same situation, front discs and pads in need of replacement - and I'm looking around to see what alternatives to OEM are recommended.  ( '07 ED30 btw )
