Knocking/clunking when turning
« on: March 11, 2017, 06:00:50 pm »
Hi,

I had h&r springs fitted a few weeks back, as soon as this was done my car developed a knocking/clunking when turning at slow speeds.  We thought it was the top mounts but these were changed today and it's still happening, what else could it be?

Many thanks

Is it a faint clunking through the wheel, rather than heavy and loud?

If so, mine has done the same since fitting H&Rs well over a year ago. It hasn't got any worse. And I remember reading similar threads at the time. Just one of those things maybe?

I'm having Same issue and I think it's the subframe. I'm going to try the spacer kit.

I developed the same issue when my H&R springs where fitted, and both top mounts and bearings are new, strange!!

It only happens with you turn the wheel on the move or standstill.

It also makes the same kind of noise when I come to a stop and pull off? But it's got worse since I've had the anti lift kit fitted, it could well be the cv boot @Shamm as I had the gaiter repaired, so maybe it's that, I'm just praying it's not the steering rack

Wishbone bushes? They knock taking off and stopping when worn.

It could be, they was an advisory on the mot before I bought the car and the dealer said he'd fix it and mot it, mot came back with no advisories,  so unless it is the bushes and something happened when fitting the new springs, who knows  but ive got the car booked in for a week tomorrow so I'll update when I know more incase other people are suffering with the same problems

Sometimes they spray wd-40 on them to make them look new and send them through the test again, tester thinks they're new and they pass. Seen it a few times.

Could be the bearings in the top mounts either, or the shocks may not be fitted properly either. Easy enough fix anyway man.

Well that's shocking! Doesn't really fill you with confidence does it, but thanks both, after the outcome of next week I'll see about doing the subrame bolts

Hopefully nothing to expensive  :scared: fitting the powerflex anti lift kit probably hasnt helped as bumps feel so harsh at the moment, but hopefully what's wrong is suspension related and the ride will feel a bit better, fingers crossed anyway!

Hey bud,

I just want to add I have also had the same knocking/clunking kind of noise at "hard launches" or when slowly moving while on full lock etc after having my wishbone bushes changed to the anti-lift kit.

I have tried the ECS subframe spacer kit (video above) and it hasn't made much of a difference to my GTI. I've just gone with the option of ignoring the noises the few times they appear as the only other fix is a set of bolts from tyrol motorsports and I'm not paying that much for a set of bolts! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TyrolSport-DeadSet-Rigid-FRONT-Subframe-Collar-Kit-ALL-MK5-6-GTi-Golf-R-S3-Leon-/361358353387 -

Thanks,
Faz

Well I had the car back from the garage with not a lot of joy, for starters the noise didn't happen when he drove it, typical, i was told that all of the suspension seems good but when the car was in the air, the steering seemed heavier then it should be? Leading him to maybe believe that it could be a ball joint being the problem or the steering rack? Got it booked back in for next Tuesday so he can investigate further. Whatever is wrong I hope it's not too expensive  :sad1:
