Rear tyres inner edge wear, can it be sorted?
« on: March 14, 2017, 05:05:20 pm »
So Ive looked it up and it a common thing so has anyone else on here sorted it out?
Standard car with 17" wheels.
A mate who works on  my car reckons he's seen loads of Mk 5s with the same problem, one of his customers got new shocks and bushes, had the wheel alignment done and it still happens.

I don't want to throw loads of money at it and it has just gone through MOT so hoping that if there was anything major it would have been picked up......maybe.
I thought the rear shocks had been changed in last few years, but I'll check out the paperwork.
So, thoughts...or just change the tyres around more often?

I have 2 mk5 Golfs. None has this issue.

What's the rear wheels camber? It's adjustable.

Same here - have had two GTI's both lowered on springs not shocks and still have regular wear on the tyres both the front and rear
Maybe go for a decent lazer alignment and see what shows up?
What tyres are you running?

No idea why you're getting that ... I run -3 degrees of camber on the rear and the wear on the inside isn't really that bad ...

If you're running stock camber you shouldn't be getting excessive wear.

Isn't it bad toe in/out that'll do that, rather than camber? Assuming the rear toe is adjustable.

I may well be talking out of my arse here.

I have the same problem. Doing my head in. Had 4 wheel alignment (to be fair non specialist) and that hasn't fixed it - the garage seemed to think alignment was right. Need to change tyres soon but don't want to just quickly ruin a new pair. I've read it could be tired rear suspension sagging but not sure. Could do with an expert to look at it but not got the money for a while. Any other ideas or fixes?

The rear axle doesn't have toe in/out adjustment. If you fiddle with the camber bolts you might change the toe a tiny bit, I think.
