What is the definition of a mid life crisis car?
« on: March 23, 2017, 04:52:03 pm »
Is it anything with two seats? Surely not as would that not be a Mini GP, Clubsport S or a Caterham?

Is it any open top sports car like an MX-5 or Boxster? But not a coupe like a Cayman or a TTRS coupe

MX-5 is a proper midlife crisis car in my opinion  :signLOL:

For me it'd probably be something that got me hooked on cars in the first place, as a youth.

So something like a nicely restored 3dr Sierra Cossie RS500, in black.

But then if I had that kind of money, my older more rational brain would go for something marginally more sensible. Second hand 911 Turbo, GTR, TTRS, that kind of thing.

From past (and ongoing!) experience, My long suffering wife would probably say.... Middle aged men in.....

"lady cars" , Mx5,  Fiat/mini convertible or similar... Especially the go fast versions in bright colours...
Cheap/low powered Merc convertibles (some are 1.8 ffs!)....

Yooofs cars....go fast astra/corsa etc.... Especially old and cheaply modified ones...

Wannabees....expensive, fairly new Evo or Subaru...anything with big wings on the back really...which also excludes some really really tasty machines such as ...Lambo, Ferrari etc!

All motor bikes, no exceptions.... :signLOL: ....and that included my scooter!

The above needs to be considered in the context that she would rather I took the GTi badges off my Eddy. Otherwise it's acceptable,  but only just.
...a new  mk 7R has a silly exhaust, and a Focus RS is not acceptable... I asked!

Opposites to the above? Acceptable as not a mid life crisis, just a show of wealth/success?
"Normal" Aston Martin, Jag XK/XF, 911 etc however see above re wings!...and very colour dependant.

However....it depends on your target audience. if i was in the market for a new Aston, I very much doubt that I would be at all concerned about the opinions of a middle aged teacher, or her friends..... :signLOL:

I'm 40 this year and been looking at the TTRS (serious bit of kit not a midlife car at all imo) but am strangely drawn to a MX-5 25th Anni Edition - now this is something I have always considered as being a bit girly and a midlife crisis car but I am strangely drawn to it.... must be "going through the change"

I think it helps that they are so cheap to run/insure so can still have the Stage 2+ Eddie at same time

I'm 35 soon, and found myself looking at MX5's recently too. Not for driving around posing in though, I was considering a turbocharged one with a cage and buckets as a track car.

The TT I'm looking at tonight is the same thing. It's a hairdresser's/middle aged man's car I know, I'm under no illusions! However...

All xepends on your situ and avsilable funds, me would be a three wheel del boy vehicle, where as mr branson would lrobaby have a bughatti veryhron. (However it is spelt)..

Kit cars, or motorbikes all common, another option is a trials bike for woodland use with a grouo, mountain bime or road push bike

I am having serious issues trying to stop myself trading the Pirelli in against an early 991 carrera. Seriously got the Porsche bug as our family car is a Macan

Always wanted a 911 and it really is keeping me awake at nights. There are so many pros and cons escpecially against the practicality of a GTi

If anything is genuinely keeping you awake at night - deal with it ASAP.

Life's too short mate. Get the Porsche. If it's a bad decision, so be it. Deal with it. But if you're anything like me, endlessly deliberating over things in your head is more of an issue than getting up the next morning and actually doing it - for better or worse.

It's funny, I'm at peace with the fact it's a hairdresser car. Should make it all the more funny when we're hopefully passing more expensive metal on track.

I've been referring to it as "the hairdryer" with my mate, who seems to be getting wound up by it! So I'm thinking maybe I should get a big f*ck off head and shoulders sticker on it...
