5W-30 or 5W-40 Non Tuned
« on: March 23, 2017, 09:46:38 am »
I'm getting a service shortly and want to know if I should opt for 5W-40 over my usual 5W-30

My car is stock.

I went for 5w-40 on my non-tuned GTi.

Simply for the fact I do like to drive it enthusiastically so though makes sense to run something designed/recommended for enthusiastic driving

You can use either.  VW themselves state 5W40 for fixed servicing and 5W30 for long life variable servicing.

If the engine isn't using any oil, stick with 5W30.  But if you want to up the quality and maybe get slightly smoother running, switch to a decent 5W40 like Fuchs Titan Pro Race S, Mobil 1 0W40 or Millers Nanodrive 5W40.

I prefer 5w40 oils because they have an higher ZDDP content which protects internal wear. I use them in both my Golfs. Millers Oils CFS 5w40 NT Nanodrive in the Ed. 30.

I plan on using 5w40 on the ED30 for the same reasons. Personally I normally stick with Fuchs Titan Pro Race S.
