Replacement Spare Key

Hi All,

Bought my 2008 ED30 last weekend as a private purchase. It only came with one key (the owner swore he only ever had one key). What's the easiest way of getting a spare? Go to the dealer and pay ££££ or get a blank from eBay and try and have it cut and coded?

I've looked into the options and done a hefty amount of searching but I've been unable to figure it out. From what I understand the immobiliser on the Mk5 is tricky to work with.

A dealer is probably easiest but I'd phone round a few car lock smiths first and make enquires. I once got two new keys cut and coded for a Vauxhall omega I once had from a place called CAR D LOCK for a reasonable price.

For the chance I'd risk the ebay key and get it coded, one of my keys was broken and had to get it fixed (covered by vw though) and it was £30 or so just to get it coded...think someone told me the key was £300 for their vauxhall, after vauxhall bent their key...

Where did you get your key coded? I agree, keys are cheap on ebay and easy to get cut etc. It's just the immobiliser coding that seems a pain.

Those eBay keys use a brittle metal and are prone to snapping.   I bought a genuine VW key from an independent company called Bournemouth Car Keys that code all types of vehicle keys for £95. Don't know where you are but it's an option.

Thanks. I'm in Northampton so Bournemouth is a bit of a trek but I'll see if there are any similar companies locally!

Theres a guy on the BMW E39 facebook group im in.. He does them and is mobile..
So he'll try and tie you into his journey plan.
PM me and Ill try and link you to his facebook page or just whats app you his number..

He does all keys btw.. not just bmw.. and he has some cool Bentley style flip keys if you're that way inclined.

Yeah. A bit far but I'm sure there's a company local to you.  VW specialist gave me a quote of £300 as they have to get in touch with VW in Germany etc etc etc. What a load of Bullsh*t if you ask me. Good luck bud.

As a price comparison there's a fella in a portakabin near me who does the Bentley fobs for £130 complete  Takes him 20 minutes   £300 is bloody robbery

Hi, this chap is really good and is widely respected on VW groups around the country. He did a lot of keys for the guys on the TT forum in a similar situation as yourself or just want a spare at a really good price. His names Craig and it's a family business, he does make it down your way quite a bit as you're middle of the country it's easy to pass through. Hope this helps!

You need the PIN code from the car,which you can access with VAG-COM
And get the bits from TPS,it takes around 2 weeks

I got a brand new key from vw with my car when I bought it, still has the tags on it.
Unsure which code is the correct one for the immobiliser though

Try £450 for an Alfa 147 key.....and that was about 4 years ago now.

It is wrong to assume that only German car dealers pull your pants down for parts prices.   £200 in spark plugs for that car too.  4 big uns and 4 little uns.  Not cheap cars at all.

I need a new key for my ed30 as well.  Does it really take 2 weeks??!
