I really hope someone can help me and my mechanic, it is starting to become a real conundrum for us in installing a rearview reverse camera on my MK5 Golf GTI DSG!

I purchased the following stereo on this website and when I received the item I have since had difficulty with the reverse camera on two issues:

https://audiotechdirect.com/direct-fit-vw7698v-vw-multi-media-stereo-with-satnav-car-info/

1. reverse/rearview camera is not coming on straight away when you trigger the gear into reverse but instead works on the AUX-IN function. We have tried playing with the phono leads at the back of stereo but still not coming on direct when in R gear!

2. When reverse camera comes on in the AUX-IN mode i.e. when you start the car up- the screen is flickering.

We have tried playing with the reverse trigger wire and all the phono sockets behind the stereo at the same time but we are still having no luck with it, and we've even used a relay but  sadly we can't seem to get it right to work properly i.e. to shoot-up on front screen straight away i.e. as soon as the reverse Gear kicks in, and to avoid flickering of the screen.

Have we missed something here and can someone advise how t connect or wire it correctly?

The stereo came with its own cambus decoder box that is connected to the stereo which is to save power I believe - of the battery.

Where are you taking the power for the camera from.

I have fitted a camera to a RCD330.

I fit a delay power box. This basically has a switched live into it (from my rear cigarette socket) and then the reverse tigger (a blue and black cable under the left boot carpet) and then that powers the camera.

I think it just takes the reverse tigger and then power comes from the switched live while the tigger is activated and also for about 3 seconds after.

I was advised I need this in the MK5.

This may not be the same issue, but worth considering.

This is educational http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,10027.0.html

Sorry mate, this is not the solution. Have seen this already. Mine is installed above the rear number plate and the one you have shown doesn't include a relay? This is the solution that I needed, but thanks anyway..

This is interesting! Yes you are right. The reason being is that the MK5 GTI has a european Canbus which is very stubborn. Can you please tell me whether your solution triggers into reverse mode (camera shot) when you trigger the gear into reverse? Bearing in mind mine is a AUTO DSG transmission.

I think I have found the solution here:

The reverse switch on the back of the head units require a +12v connection into them, If there is not +12v then it won't switch. Basically on the canbus European cars, because they have a very integrate canbus system and the vehicles will often tell you when bulbs are out on the vehicle, the voltage on the reverse bulb will drop from +12v (on key turned to accessories) to below +12v, even sometimes as low as +9v, when the engine is started. Hence this is why the trigger for the reverse isn't working when the engine is running but when you turn the engine off and put the keys into accessories position, it may display when in reverse. The canbus system controls the voltage and ampage of the reverse bulb positive pole and because of the actions that happen when the engine is started, this is why it fails.

A relay is going to convert the reverse bulb voltage into a stable +12v voltage for our reverse switch on the head unit. We are going to need to wire the reverse camera like this:

1. Rear Camera DC plug (red and black) - The red wire needs to be connected to a +12v switch ignition source. The black to an earth point.

The rest, we will be using the relay.

2. Pin 87 - The red trigger wire on the RCA plug needs to be plugged into here and only here (the other end will be connected to the head units "reverse" or "back detection" wire)

3. Pin 86 - This is where your reverse bulb positive pole wire goes into (you would spur a wire off the reverse bulb positive pole and into this relay pin position)

4. Pin 30 - Spur a wire off the red DC power plug into here. This will now be a +12v switched feed going into the relay.

5. Pin 85 - Earthed to chassis.

I think the timer delay I have fitted is essentially a relay with the added benefit of keeping power live to it for a few seconds after the reverse signal is lost (i.e. You put it back into Drive or 1st gear)

My car is a manual and black/blue cable is the tigger when the car goes into reverse. I think this black/blue cable turns white when it goes up behind the air bag / corner pillar and then to the reverse light.
