150K GTI DSG Buying Advice?
« on: March 31, 2017, 04:04:45 pm »
Going to look at a 2005 GTI DSG tomorrow. Its done almost 150k but it looks in great condition and the service history is stacked up as follows:

30/06/2006 - 16254 Miles - Volkswagen Main Dealer
01/06/2007 - 22554 Miles - Volkswagen Main Dealer
12/05/2008 - 37089 Miles - Volkswagen Main Dealer
14/02/2009 - 47720 Miles - Volkswagen Main Dealer
03/11/2009 - 57607 Miles - Independent Garage
03/06/2010 - 67505 Miles - Kwik Fit
16/03/2011 - 76905 Miles - Kwik Fit
17/08/2011 - 86291 Miles - Mackenzies Volkswagen Specialist
01/08/2012 - 95932 Miles - R.C. Motors ltd VW & Audi Specialist
12/06/2013 - 105078 Miles - Volkswagen Main Dealer
31/05/2014 - 116195 Miles - Volkswagen Main Dealer
10/02/2015 - 125705 Miles - Volkswagen Main Dealer
30/05/2015 - 130376 Miles - Volkswagen Main Dealer
29/12/2015 - 135840 Miles - Volkswagen Main Dealer
10/06/2016 - 139862 Miles - R.C. Motors ltd VW & Audi Specialist
21/11/2016 - 145177 Miles - R.C. Motors ltd VW & Audi Specialist
Important service information:
This car has had 2 cambelt changes:
86291 Miles Cambelt replaced
139862 Miles Cambelt replaced
DSG GEARBOX SERVICE - DSG GEARBOX OIL AND FILTER CHANGED ON 116,195 at Volkswagen Main Dealer
In 2016 alone a total of £950 was spent on:
139862 Miles - Cambelt Kit, Waterpump, Auxilliary Belt, Brake Fluid Change, CV Boot Kit.
142194 Miles - New Alternator
145177 Miles - Interim Service, Tyres
146427 Miles - New Starter Motor

Most people say mileage is just a number these days and it could be a bargain if I can get it at the right price!

I've had DSG before so ill check the box is not clunky, sloppy into gears etc.

How long can these engines go for? I've seen one on here on the owners thread at about 170k, Anything I should be looking out for?

Have you got a compression tester? It would be worth doing it on all 4 cylinders just to get a gauge on the health of the lump or to warn you off of impending doom.

The DSG service is almost due as well, worth bearing in mind

I haven't no, any other way to tell from driving the car?

Every 40k they need to be serviced don't they? Had my eye on that.

Yeah so you've got 6k until the next DSG service is due, where abouts are you seeing the car?

Not really, if you can feel it from in the car the engines knackered, generally I do a compression test on any high milers I buy/anything with questionable service history, if you can get your hands on one it would be beneficial

Best to take it for a long drive with the owner and even an mot or rac check if you want to be 100% sure this is the one for you imo

I know FA about mechanics but it looks like no dsg oil change until late on? Missed the 40 & 80 K.....
That would be my concern and would want to check out as well as compression test.

Hiya buddy, it would be worth asking or trying to find out if somewhere amongst the history the cam follower has been changed and with that the cam chain and tensioner health.

I was going to check this out, have dropped a message to them asking about previous DSG services.

Just to echo Lewo - Its first and only DSG service was done at 116k which would set alarm bells ringing in my head. However, services were carried out at 37k and 47k so you would have thought the dealership would have advised the owner of this?
All the services have been carried out religously - seems strange for them to skip the DSG service?

I bought a 144k GTI a few months ago as was priced well (£3600) and drives really well.

Had extensive service history and DSG box was serviced every 2 years regardless of mileage & had just had water pump, chain, tensioner done.

Sods law it had an aircon leak. Despite owner saying aircon was fine. Buy a 4.99 aircon thermometer from halfords and test aircon works as have a feeling this is going to cost me :(

I also bought a high mileage mk5 gti with dsg. 145000 for 3.5k

Was right and perfect spec for me  , looked at loads with less miles but nothing was as good i thought.

Mines got fsh aswell and had 4 dsg changes . Was well kept .

Drives and pulls fine, if the mileage wasnt there youd never think its done nearly 150k.

High mileage usually puts many off but you can get a great bargin .
