Which 17" tyres?

Hi all,

Car is getting close to needing new shoes, current tyres are the Bridgestones it came with. Grip wise I found them to be fine but a bit hard. What's the general consensus on tyres for a MK5 @ 17" size?

Premium choices would be good... I did look at Kumho etc in case they had something decent as well so all options welcomed!

I've got Avon tyre's on mine that came with the car. They feel good but found out the side walls can start to crack, so now keeping an eye on them. I'm wondering what make tyre to replace them with when they need replacing.

i bought 4 Avon ZV7's recently as opposed to the premium brands as they were £62 per corner fitted, i find them very good - excellent in the wet. i've done about 3k on them so far.

I'm currently running Michelin Pilot Sport 4's on mine (well 3 of them) in 225/45/17's. Dry and wet grip is very good but they are not cheap (about £92 a corner in our size). The rim protector design is poor however when I tried to slowly mount a kerb and unfortunately gashed the alloy and rip a part of the sidewall! 

Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymmetric 3 is another tyre worth considering, well adept in dry and wet in most conditions and not that expensive, about £77 a corner for the XL version from F1 Autocentre.

If not the Michelin PS4, the Continental SportContact 5 are a great all rounder too.

Try Black Circles for the PS4s in the 17" size, they were the best price when I looked a couple of wks ago.

I still rate Uniroyal Rainsport 3s very highly. Just got 4 for my car in 18s from Camskill.

A good all round tyre and very good value.

Another vote for conti sport contact 5s here :) got 5k use on my current set and am very happy with them.

Got Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 2s on my fronts (XL version) which have been good, noticed improved handling immediately when I changed to them. I will be getting either them or the 3s on my rears which need replacing  soon - the 3s actually seem to be cheaper.

Another vote for Avon ZV7s. I was originally going to get a set of 4 Michelin PS4s but my car already had a set of barely worn Avon's on the rear which seemed a shame to bin. Excellent grip in the dry and they don't spin up at all in the wet like my old tyres did.
