Updating maps on RNS510, do I also need a Sw/Fw update?

Sorry if this is the wrong section. IN addition, VWNavi is down and I'm getting desperate!

Have an original VW RNS510. I think it's version 6 or 7 maps. Bought from ebay about 6-7 years ago.
Was advertised as
"Version B, SW Version: 2760, Will fit cars with old CAN Gateways and will not cause battery drain. Video in motion activated"

Since I got it I changed the splash screen to the SEAT version (it's in a 2010 Leon FR, previously had it in a 2007 Leon Stylance). It displays SEAT service centres on the POI not VW! Not sure if this is because of the car it's in or the change to the screen.

Recently the unit has started spinning the compass when in Nav mode, and now is simply stuck on always pointing north. Everything else works as normal. I disconnected the Nav antenna and it made no difference, so I figure this might be my issue. So when buying a replacement antenna on that auction site, the seller also had a dvd of V9 maps for sale, so I plumped for them as well.


Just did a check on the hidden service menu, details as follows,

So my question;
If I want to upgrade the maps to V9 (2013) can I do it straight or do I need to update firmware? I understand I may not be able to get latest maps (V15) without firmware upgrades but I'm not sure about V9. I'd prefer to keep my SEAT screen, VIM and most important my 30 odd hours of music on the HDD. All advice appreciated.

Well, I can confirm that it is possible to update maps to v9 without updating Firmware from 2760. Maps updated and working. I also installed the new satnav antenna. This time I placed it in the roof beside the rear view mirror mount.

But my unit is still stuck pointing north.
Any ideas?

in map view...there is a button on screen, top right hand corner.
It looks like a circle and arrow.  push it.   it toggles between 'always north' view & 'car direction' view

Yeah I know but in either mode (or even 3d mode) it's pointing north. So when I'm travelling south the display shows me reversing! Travelling east or west I'm going sideways.

Positioning is correct but nav is useless as she keeps asking me to turn around.
