Soon to be GTI owner...
« on: April 10, 2017, 09:21:58 pm »
Put a deposit down on a 2006 DSG at the weekend

Previously had mk2 and mk3 GTIs and Bora's (TDI and 1.8T 180) but more recently been in french rubbish (company cars)

Jobs that will need doing are:-

Headlight refurb - any tips would be appreciated

Exhaust polish up - as above

Rear light replacement as one has moisture - anyone selling a set please let me know

A good detail, car has covered 6000 miles in the last 3 years but has been well maintained with full service history and recent-ish replacement of all common faults, Diverter, fuel pump follower, PCV

Can't wait to pick it up next week, will post up some pics

Get a build thread up when you get the car

Polishing headlights
Get multiple high grits of wet and dry sandpaper (2000, 3000, 4000 grit)
Polish using a good polish and dual action polisher
Seal using a UV protectant
I've just done it on two cars last week if you need more info

Exahust
See my build thread - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,89715.msg907250.html#msg907250
Basically polish using metal polish
Some can be revived but some are pitted beyond savior so people often just cap them with new ones

Rear light replacement
Not necessary, you can clean out the water marks and seal with silicone so it doesn't come back
Alternatively both myself and @Zipupurmickey have full sets of rear original VW lights (but we're from Ireland)

Cheers luke, very helpful

Zipupurmickey has already been in touch about selling me some! There is water ingress but also some obvious marks which i don't think can be removed, i'll post up some pics when i get the car.

Out of interest how much do you want for your rear lights? Assuming genuine and in good condition?

Ah no I wouldn't take someone else's sale!

I'm sure you're getting a good deal from @Zipupurmickey anyway!

A quick polish when they arrive and they'll be perfect!
