Fitting and Coding a RCD510 with DAB
« on: January 26, 2010, 08:43:38 pm »
It’s taken 9 months of searching but today my RCD510 with DAB has arrived.  I have read mixed reports about the DAB reception but it worked fine in my old golf and I cannot put up with fatty Moyles for much longer.

The actual fitting of the unit looks pretty straight forward however the whole canbus/coding/battery drain issue is all a mystery to me.

My car is a 06 reg GTI (First reg 25/5/06) and from the VCDS report which my friend local independent ran it appears I have the following can bus installed. 1K0 907 530 F.

I’m assuming that I need to upgrade the CANBUS but I’m unsure which revision to go for.  Can anyone advise which one will prevent this battery drain issue.

Thanks in advance

Rob

The current one obtainable from the dealers is AD, anything above a L will be fine

Use VCDS before removing the old gateway and note down everything in device 19, write down the code number and the descriptions that are enabled or screen dump them, check the car type in long coding help on the last byte
Install the new gateway, and select the same options in the new gateway (the code numbers and descriptions may not be in the same order). Then in long coding helper, set the car type in the last byte
clear all the errors
go for a drive
don't worry if you lose your auto dimming rear view mirror if fitted and rear wiper, after about 20 mins of driving the car will rediscover them all by itself

Bear in mind that not all cars suffer from the battery drain issue. Mine doesn't for example. Mine is an 05 plate GTI and I've had my RCD510 in for a couple of months now without any problems on the original gateway.

Id say, try it for a few weeks first and only get a new gateway if your battery goes flat.
