Looking to buy mk5 golf gt TDI

Hi guys as the title says im currently in the market for a mk5 gt tdi

Can anyone tell me which one would be better , either the tdi 140 or the 170? year 2008

I like power so my heart says go for the 170 but my head says 140 for better fuel consumption,cheaper tax and insurence

Also would it be better to go manual or DSG?, bare in mind i have never drove a DSG / automatic car ever!

I have £2500 , not the best budget ever but im hoping i can get a decent one for that

I'll do a PD140 with a remap. Should give some like 180bhp and still with good fuel numbers.

I've got a mk5 tdi 08 plate, 170bhp stage 1 remap with now 214bhp get 50mpg depending on how you drive, 89000 miles, black with 18" black Vancouver alloys, full leather, kenwood satnav with built in Bluetooth, cruise control, FSH.

I'd maybe sell it but would need to be more than your £2.5k budget!

140's have no DPF. Mine with a Darkside Remap and EGR delete is 170-180bhp and regularly see 50+mpg

Eighteen88, i wish i could afford more, its took me a long time to get what i have now, your car sounds awsome and just what im looking for, but unfortunatly i cant afford it,

So if i was to get a 140. what other mods would i have to do if i was to get it remapped to 170-180?

also, if anyone see's any 140s within my budget, and under 120k miles please post link here,

Depends a lot on what it will be used for. I have a 2007 gt tdi 170, manual, remapped to about 210bhp and 300lbft of torque, it pulls very well and puts a big smile on my face and averages around 44mpg but can get 50 on longer drives. The 170 does have the DPF though so if you're doing a lot of short journeys/town driving then It's definitely something to take into consideration and possibly avoided.

I have no experience of the DSG system but worth a try before you commit to buying one as some people love it and some hate it.

I think for that budget you're more likely to get a 140 with a pretty high mileage but there are some good deals about. Usual applies, make sure it's got a good service history, check arches etc for rust, common golf problems... the 170 also had an injector recall so best tocheck that's been done before buying one, plenty of info if you search the forum.

Hi Chris Thanks, i will be using the car mainly for short journeys, the mrs is a care worker and travels house to house, no more than a mile in between each house.

So yeah its loooking more likely that the 140 is my best option, i do like power but im not a massive speed freak, i just it to be there when needed.
 if i do deceide on a remap, would i need upgraded clutch ? as thats something i wouldnt be able to afford anytime soon.

Yeah, I would avoid the DPF then.

the 140 with a remap should be around 170ish bhp and the standard clutch should be fine to handle that.

No worries, there are a lot of them about so don't just buy the first one you see in budget. it's worth being picky about condition and servicing etc The engines are pretty bulletproof so can handle the high mileages.

Bodywork wise, look for rust on front arches, front sills; near where they meet the arches and under rear badge/handle... think that's it. For a 140, the engine will be a BKD, Try and go for an 2006/2007 MY as they have a later revision C head. Most optional extras's can be retro fitted, like leather, highline clocks, multi function steering wheel, satnav etc, but Climatronic AC isn't one of them, so if that's important, make sure the one you buy has it.

Recently bought my mum a 56 plate golf GT (tdi) 170bhp dsg. Black 5dr with a pretty basic spec but auto was the main priority as my mum has difficulties driving at times. Drives really nice and is a low milleage at 74k with FVWSH. I enjoy driving more than my edition sometimes

Rtech remaps show figures around 210bhp and loads of torque. I am considering in doing this along with a DPF delete as the motorway runs will slow down soon and I don't want any issues from town driving.

I've heard the 140bhp are little hooners and with a remap will be plenty of fun around town with a decent MPG return.

I would recommend to be patient and be willing to compromise on spec for a well looked after one and decent miles (you'll be surprised there are still a few on the market with less than 80-90k). You can always get the little bits you want at a later date.
