EVERYBODY PLEASE BE CAREFUL
« on: May 26, 2017, 01:12:20 pm »
Never thought I'd be typing this message but here goes. Today I had a speed ticket come through the door from the police.
The ticket says I was speeding at 10:24 AM in Hampshire but this is impossible as I was asleep in bed at the time  and I live in Birmingham.
Please be careful if you are posting pictures of your car if you don't blur out the registration plate is suggest you do as I wouldn't want this happening to anyone else I have a feeling this is going to be a nightmare to sort. Be careful everybody

What a pain in the arse!

As far as fixed cameras go, if they don't have a picture of the car the plate is registered to at the DVLA, then they haven't got a leg to stand on.

If it was a road side speed trap, then it's up to them to prove you were driving, and if they didn't record the make and model of car, again, no leg to stand on.

That's what I'm thinking I'm in such a shock I couldn't believe it. Hopefully it doesn't come to it but if it goes to court luckily my Mom was off work so she was home and my nan was there. So they both know I was fast asleep in bed. Lucky that I have two people who can account for my whereabouts.

I'm going to try and get it sorted today and look up some contact details for them if not definitely Monday .
My cars a bit unique anyway with the front splitter black alloys etc so I'm hoping they have a picture of the car so I can prove it's not mine

This happened to my dads car recently, it was up for sale and I think someone cloned the plate by looking at the ad. Luckily I had cctv to prove our car was outside my house at the the of offence. I appealed it and they asked for the pictures. The car with the cloned plate had a different grill and different number plate screw positions so they cleared the charges

I reckon you'll be fine.  Even if your plate is on 2 identical Golfs, we still have unique VIN numbers to fall back on, and you can't get that from a pic online, unless it's an inside job at the DVLA, or a dealer etc.  Without catching the offender, it's going to be very difficult to prove your VIN is the guilty one!

Its all too common I am afraid.  Here a link to an article about this style of fraud

https://www.theguardian.com/money/2016/feb/27/number-plate-cloning-drivers-fraud

Telling the police straight away is important.  I would recommend also telling your insurers.  If the other car is involved in an accident it will save you some hassle if your insurers are already aware of the cloning.

The whole registration system is outmoded and needs an overhaul.   They tried to mitigate it by making reg plate replication harder without a V5 and license as proof of ownership, but it wasn't enough.

Other than GPS tracking + unique digital signatures built into the cars, I'm not sure how they can do it.....and speeding won't be possible either.   I guess things being so out of date affords us certain freedoms for the time being!

Contact them, say you were not in the area, and get them to provide a photo. Not sure about the comments on VIN , as the police can only go on the reg plate - they won't have the VIN for the other car.

I had a NIP recently, in Hampshire co-incidently, and asked for the pic - you could clearly identify the driver (me) and wifey in car. That was a mobile speed trap.

The offending car may well be another GTI in the same colour - that's why these muppets copy the plates.

Hopefully the pic will prove all you need, in sufficient detail - they sent it electronically as I remember, so was quite quick, but resolving this one could take a while

Good luck

It is so easy to clone Someone's plate. Just go on say autotrader, filter to your car and colour and bingo. Off to ebay and order plates.

It a pretty rare cloning, but just saying how easy it is to do.

What has VIN got to do with it? If on the photo evidence there is your cars "clone and it's looks near identical then you don't really have a leg to stand on unless you can prove you were at work etc. No proof and there's really not much you can do.

same thing happened with my car when the previous owner advertised it on Autotrader.

The car with the cloned plates was the same car and colour.... only mine has a sunroof which was the only difference. Lucky...

No it's not.
The Police will send the registered keeper (person on the V5c) a 172 notice asking who was driving at the time.  It's is the registered keeper's duty to declare who's driving.

You are best searching on the following forum for "clone":

http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?showforum=5

There is some accurate advice on there, ask if you are not sure.

Declaring and proving are 2 different things.
