Bwa engine thermostat replaced now fans running hard
« on: May 30, 2017, 09:13:01 pm »
Good evening folks recently changed my thermostat for a genuine one as I wasn't hitting 90 on dash.. Now I'm rock solid 90 but when I switch car off and remove key the fans come on flat out for 50 seconds.. Torque app says coolant is at 103 everywhere I go now aswell is this normal?

Did you definetly plug in the wee temp sensor on the stat? you may have an air lock if the system hasn't bled properly.

There wasn't a sensor on the stat? I did remove the intake to fit,  which sensor could cause this high reading? Also how do you bleed the system?

The systems should be self bleeding, when it's up to temp feel both radiator pipes see it there both hot if so must be a sensor problem. This on a mk5 gti?

Not too sure to be honest mate. I remember when I did my main thermostat there was a sensor on that and I think there's one on the right hand side of the engine (if you were stood facing the engine)

The coolant is self bleeding to a point but you need to put the heater on full heat and hold the revs at 2500rpm until the fan kicks in (above 90c) with the cap off. Keep checking the coolant level and keep it topped up.

Good practice to renew Your temperature sensor located on the side of the block underneath the intake pipe and your small fan might of had it mine did and it sounded like a jumbo jet taking off after shutting down the engine

Thanks mate which is the main temp sensor? The one on the end of the engine above gearbox or below thermostat housing?

My 07 Mk5 GTI had the exact same problem after a main thermostat change.
was changed because of the temp stat not being at a standard 90.

after the change, the big fan used to run at turn off for ages. Really annoying.
Never solved TBH
