Quick S3 brake Question
« on: February 03, 2010, 06:13:44 pm »
Fitting the rear brakes as we speak - Are the pads the same as the standard GTI brakes?  They just dont seem to cover enough of the disc.

Cheers :happy2:

Am sure they are the same

If to buy a set of gti pads you will need the old clips from the r32 pads

But am 99.9% sure thay are the same pads :happy2:

I fitted the S3 rear brakes to a leon tfsi and used new pads for an FR (Same setup as GTI)

Thanks for the quick reply chaps.  They fit but just dont seem to cover the disc enough (3-4mm gap on the innner and outer edge)!  If someone could confrim 100% that would be great, as I have left my car on the ramp tonight, until I get a definate answer or speak to Audi tomorrow morning.

I double checked before fitting them to mine and the pads that came out of the 288mm rear brake setup had the same ferrodo part number as the ones in the 310mm setup.
The part numbers from VW or Audi will be different as the clips in the pad set will be different. The clips are wider as the discs are twice as thick.

The part numbers on the ferrodo pads should be 139 60 (A) FL1 IT

There is a set of r32 brakes in my garage that Im selling and the pads in that set have the same numbers

Can also confirm from the wear on the discs that the pads are approx 4mm from both edges of the disc

Thanks Jon that confirms it then!  Iit doesn't make sense having the bigger discs with the same size pad?  But obviously more leverage and cooler temps etc.  Thanks for your help

Right here is the confusing bit, which Audi can't answer, so I ve re-ordered another set just in case!;

The part number for the pads is 1KO698451K, which is what we've been supplied, however the pads inside the 'sealed' box have the part number, 1KO615415G.  Audi cannot confrim if this is a supercede or not, if anyone has a set od rear pads lying about, would you mind checking the part numbers for me.

I really wouldn't worry about it, Pad numbers get superceded all the time. Buying pads for VAG is like trading in crude oil, they'll give whatever manufacturer gives them the best bid on the day and give superceded part numbers for different suppliers.

TMD - which is textar, pagid,(mintex) will get a part number
Ferodo - will get a part number
Galfer - OEM only will get a part number

As somebody quite rightly said the clips are wider and the bolt tensile strength changes on Passat/S3/R32 bolts from 8.9 class to 10.9 class.

I just buy those Passat ones from ebay £22 same as an S3   Reg 90 pads are reg 90 pads.

PS the number on the back of the pads could be well different to those onthe box - not a problem, loads of OEM Gti pads came through with 3C0 part numbers on the back of them in a 1K0 box
